Subject: Blue Jays @ Red Sox
If either of these teams had any pitching or defense they might be a factor. At least they can hit a little.... Game 1: The three late runs that an unaccountably-tired Dave Stieb allowed (bringing his total for the game to 6) made no difference whatsoever in the outcome because the Jays had played "Kick the (Oil) Can" in a major way (1 IP, 6 runs) and Joe Beckwith was abused for 121 pitches in relief. Final score: 14-6 as the Jays notched 20 hits, 5 of them by Tony Fernandez. Game 2: What a coincidence - the putrid Jays defense allows 3 unearned runs; we lose by 2. Final score: 6-4. Doyle Alexander and Bruce Hurst had nearly identical mediocre starts, with the difference being that Hurst allowed more earned runs and therefore attained the victory. Game 3: More atrocious defense on both sides today, but Toronto got something barely resembling decent pitching and won by the score of 4-0. The Sox did not lack for chances, despite the fact that Bobby Castillo amazingly failed to walk even a single batter in 6.2 innings (probably because he was too busy allowing hits). Castillo and 2 relievers scattered 8 Boston hits, all of which were singles. Mike Heath homered for the second straight day for the visitors. Game 4: Jimmy Key shakily went the distance and the Jays scored in each of the final four frames to come from behind for a 7-3 win. Mike Heath made it 3 games in a row with homers and is now temporarily batting over .400. Wade Boggs did very little damage (!) in this series but we'd rather not see any more of Mike Easler, who entered this week batting somewhere around .003 and multiplied his average many time in these 4 games.
