Subject: Reds @ Pirates
After our first not-entirely-luckless home series of the 1985 season, the Reds looked to build on that success and perhaps sneak briefly into the pennant race for the first time in 4 long years. Not only didn't it happen, but we set what might be a league record for futility in the series opener.... Game 1: In one of the most amazing performances in the history of sports, Ron Mathis (a 6-ERA pitcher recently rescued from the scrap heap) makes his major league debut and tosses a 13-baserunner shutout against the hapless Reds, who must have set a record by hitting into FIVE double plays, including 2 with the bases loaded. Final score: 5-0. Cincy outfielder Gary Redus risked banishment by pointlessly violating the league-wide injunction against him ever getting a hit in a road game (see also his 1983 & 1984 split data) by going 1 for 4. Mathis also found the one possible way of getting on base via his pitchers hitting card, thus completing his four leaf clover of a day. Game 2: The Reds return to more conventional methods of defeat, the bullpen choking yet another game away in the bottom of the 9th and rendering our 2-run comeback meaningless. Final score: 3-2. We hit into only 1 DP today, but supplemented our aid to our opponent with 3 errors. Game 3: The one and only Cincinnati player who doesn't spend all of his time under a dark cloud is Tom Browning, who came into this game having made 8 major league starts with a 6-0 record. Make it 7-0: Browning scattered 6 hits and made the Reds' puny 6-single attack hold up for a 2-1 win, the difference being an unearned run. Browning's only blemish was a BP home run by Tony Pena which was discovered lurking on a 6-11 dice roll. Alan |
