Subject: Blue Jays @ Royals

A series featuring 4 close games (even the one where the final score wasn't), the Jays winning 3 of them and could easily have made it 4.  There were 3 triples in the series, all of them legged out by fleet-footed catchers Don Slaught & Jim Sundberg...

Game 1: Toronto took an early lead and never managed to quite blow all of it, despite a major effort in that direction.  Final score: 7-5.  The TOA Arson Squad came through with 6 baserunners and 3 runs in 2 innings of relief, but Bill Caudill finally got the job done.  Jim Clancy decisively outpitched K.C. starter Bret Saberhagen, but the bullpen closed the gap.

Game 2: Two solo gophers in the 1st gave the Jays another early lead, which evaporated quickly thanks to a critical unearned run.  The offense went to sleep for 6 innings, but the Toronto pen (for a change) didn't allow our opponent anything either and the game went to extras tied 3-3.  TOA notched another solo homer in the 10th and won the game, 4-3.  Tom Henke retired all 5 Royals he faced to earn the victory.

Game 3: Doyle Alexander went the distance and almost successfully scattered 10 hits, but lost anyway.  Final score: 1-0.  Danny Jackson tossed 6.1 shutout innings and the Jays didn't even register a hit against the K.C. pen today.  The lone run fittingly scored without an RBI, coming on a DP grounder by Bill Buckner which plated Willie Wilson, who had walked and advanced to third on the one hit that Alexander didn't scatter well enough.

Game 4: The Jays constructed yet another early lead and generally outplayed the Royals (LOB: TOA - 11, KCA, 5) but it wasn't until Pat Clements coughed up a 3-run gopher in the 9th that we found any breathing room at all.  Final score: 6-1.  Toronto had 3 doubles, a triple and a homer among our 10 hits (and 6 walks) while Rich Dotson & Bill Caudill held the Royals to 6 hits & 1 walk.  Dotson got his first W of 1985 while KCA starter Mark Gubicza took his first loss.

Alan
