Expos were 5-0 versus lefties going into this series and the Giants throw three lefties: Conclusion? Expos get good pitching…
Game 1 Bill Gullickson came through with a solid 8 innings at Candlestick Park where the Montreal Expos beat the San Francisco Giants 3 to 2.
The game was decided in the top of the 8th inning. Tim Raines stroked a one-base hit. Raines was safe on a stolen base. Luis Aguayo then ripped a base-knock. Mike Schmidt dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Fred Lynn stepped into the box and slapped a base-hit. After another out, Harold Baines got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Jeff Reardon relieved and was untouched by San Francisco as he recorded the save, his 11th.
The winning pitcher was Gullickson (4-1) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Terry Leach (0-2) was given the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 3 hits and no walks.
Game 2 Luis Aguayo left the yard and had 2 RBI and Joe Hesketh delivered 7 solid innings as the Montreal Expos defeated the San Francisco Giants 6 to 4 at Candlestick Park .
Montreal took the lead for keeps in the top of the 2nd inning when they tallied 2 runs on 1 hit. The crucial at-bat was provided by Sal Butera who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he bombed a two-run dinger (his 1st of the season). San Francisco threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Hesketh (1-3) allowed 1 run in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Hesketh got help from Jeff Reardon who was credited with his 12th save. Britt Burns (1-4) ended up with the loss.
Game 3 Tom Seaver pitched 8 strong innings at Candlestick Park where the Montreal Expos beat the floundering San Francisco Giants by the score of 4 to 3.
Harold Baines’ first inning grand slam were the only runs the Expos would get…but it was just enough.
Seaver (4-1) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and no walks in 8 innings lowering his ERA from 4.46 to 3.88. San Francisco made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Tim Burke got the save, his 3rd. Vida Blue (1-1) was charged with the loss. Steve Bivens was beaming after the game, 'Not only were we making good contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love winning these tight ones! It was just our day - no doubt about it!'
