Subject: Reds @ Padres

Cincy wins 3 of 4.

Game 1: Jim Merritt allowed only 1 ER in 6 innings for San Diego, but
suffered his 11th loss of 1969 as Lee May (3 hits including a homer) and
Tony Cloninger (1 run in 7.2 IP) led the Reds to a 7-1 victory. Cloninger
and mop-up man Clay Carroll combined to limit the Padres to 5 hits, a total
barely execceding their number of errors (4) in the game.

Game 2: Cincinnati banged out 16 hits and drew 10 walks off five Padre
hurlers in a 15-5 rout. Clay Kirby allowed 7 runs and 15 baserunners in his
5.2 innings of work, and the Reds tacked on 7 more (5 unearned) off Jack
Baldschun in the ninth, ending what had been a somewhat close game.

Eight of the Reds' 16 hits went for extra bases, including two more home
runs by the seemingly-unstoppable Lee May.

Game 3: This one went 10 innings, the Padres managed a grand total of 5
hits - and won the game. San Diego took their first lead of the series when
Joe Morgan homered (a 2-run shot) off Don Wilson in the third. Cincinnati
scored a run in the fifth to cut the lead in half, and when HAL yanked
starter Gary Ross to begin the sixth, reliever Tommie Sisk watched as his
first pitch to Tony Perez left the yard, tying the contest.

The score remained tied at 2 into the bottom of the tenth, when Chris
Cannizzaro led off with a walk. Ivan Murrell pinch-ran and two outs later
was balked to second by Wilson, who went the distance for the Reds on the
mound. Lightweight shortstop Roberto Pena then proceeded to double Murrell
home (narrowly missing a homer), giving San Diego the 3-2 decision. Frank
Reberger pitched 2+ innings of scoreless relief for the win.

Game 4: Another nailbiter, this one going 11 innings and seeing the Padres
actually outhit the Reds (9-8), but failing to win this time. Starters Jim
McGlothlin and Joe Niekro both pitched very well, but neither was around at
the end.

Cincinnati broke on top in the second on a Johnny Bench solo homer. The
score remained 1-0 despite San Diego's threat in the eighth, when
pinch-runner Terry Harmon was gunned down at the plate by Bobby Tolan on Joe
Morgan's two-out double.

In the San Diego ninth, Jim McGlothlin allowed Cincy-killer Roberto Pena's
first career home run, tying the game and resulting in the weary hurler's
immediate departure. McGlothlin still has only 1 win in 13 starts, despite
an ERA below 3.00 (because of a run-support rate even lower).

Neither team scored in the tenth, and in the eleventh HAL did Cincinnati a
favor by bringing in ex-Red Billy McCool for his first appearance of 1969
for the Padres. Pitcher Gary Nolan led off with a single+error on SS Terry
Harmon, Pete Rose doubled him in, an eventual GIDP cost the Reds any chance
at more runs, but one turned out to be enough. Joe Morgan doubled to lead
off the bottom of the inning, but only got as far as third base before Lee
May snared a 1B(X) grounder to end the game.

We now hope for some good luck at home against the Dodgers, and also that
the Giants can do no better than 3-4 in their seven games this week with the
rejuvenated Atlanta Cubs :-)

Alan
