Subject: 1984 World Series game 3

Leading 2 games to none, the Mariners returned home hoping to make quick work of the Padres.  Today's starters were Dave Dravecky and Charlie Hough and one of them had considerable trouble locating home plate - but it wasn't the knuckleballer....

Neither team scored in the first three frames, and Dravecky had a no-hitter going at that point although he had to escape a self-inflicted bases-loaded jam in the first inning: with 2 outs Dravecky walked John Wockenfuss who advanced to second when Garry Templeton booted Alvin Davis's grounder.  Another free pass (Dravecky would issue 6 of them in 4.2 innings) to Steve Henderson filled the sacks but the Pads dodged a bullet when Darrell Evans speared a line drive off the bat of Al Cowens to end the threat.

Cowens would do his damage a little later....

Charlie Hough walked just 2 batters today, both of them coming with 2 outs and nobody aboard in the San Diego 4th.  And both of them scored moments later when Terry Kennedy came through with an RBI double off of Hough's card, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Which Dravecky wasted no time whatsoever in returning.  He walked Davis & Henderson to open the SEA 4th and Cowens immediately followed with a double that tied the contest 2-2.

Garth Iorg popped out to Templeton but Craig Reynolds then singled home Cowens to make the score 3-2.  Gary Pettis's single moved Reynolds up a base and Reynolds went on to third on Jack Perconte's flyout to Tony Gwynn.

With just a 5% chance of success the M's tried to pull off the double steal, Reynolds easily being retired at home and charitably letting the Padres out of the inning without it becoming a complete disaster.

When Dravecky walked two more batters with 2 outs in the 5th, his time on the mound expired and he was replaced by Eric Show.  Show would face 10 batters and notch 3.1 IP of perfect relief.

San Diego would get runners as far as second base in the 5th and 7th, but no further.  Hough gave way to Joe Sambito (who faced just one batter before smartly exiting) in the 8th and Gene Garber retired all 5 Padres he faced to earn his second save in 3 games.

Mariners win 3-2, with game 4 to be played whenever the involved owners can arrange to meet for head-to-head play.

Alan
