Subject: the season that would not end...... is finally over

Congrats to the Seattle Mariners on their 4 games to 1 victory over the San Diego Padres in the 1984 World Series!

========================================================

Game 5 starters were Jerry Koosman and Mark Langston.  Langston, the prospective Series MVP, tossed 6 shutout innings allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks while fanning 6.  Langston went 2-0 in the Series with an ERA of 0.75.

This game did not start off well for Langston, however.  Garth Iorg threw away the first grounder of the contest and after a couple of K's Craig Reynolds stumbled while chasing Kevin McReynolds' ground ball and the bases became loaded when Sixto Lezcano walked.  But Mark Brown hit a grounder that was actually fielded cleanly, and the side was retired.

Koosman dispatched the first 4 M's batters but Steve Henderson lined a home run over the left field wall with one out in the 2nd and the game began to unravel for the visitors.  Al Cowens followed Henderson's blast with a routine fly to right field which Tony Gwynn apparently lost in the lights for a 2-base error.  Craig Reynolds came through with a 2-out single to give Seattle a 2-0 lead after 2 innings.

The Mariners got back to back singles to open the 3rd and pulled off a double steal to place runners at 2nd & 3rd with nobody out.  Those runners eventually scored on a groundout and a sac fly and the score was 4-0 after 3.

That would conclude the Seattle scoring, as relievers Montefusco, Lefferts & Show allowed several hits, but no runs in their 4 innings of work.

Although Langston was cruising along, having thrown just 78 pitches in 6 innings, he was replaced by Gene Garber to open the 7th inning.

San Diego's only scoring came in the 8th when pinch hitter Tim Flannery led off with a walk and pinch hitter Graig Nettles singled him to second.  After a forceout, Craig Reynolds knocked down McReynolds' RBI grounder but then threw wildly, giving everyone an extra base.

But Garber got tough and mowed down Lezcano and Brown on a popup and a groundout.

The Padres went out 1-2-3 in the 9th, with pinch hitter Darrell Evans tapping a grounder to Reynolds, who made the play to end the Series.

Alan
