Guys: This is a fun, fast-paced league with good people in it.
The Late 20th Century League is looking for one owner. We are a retro league that is currently playing the 1961 season. The league has a simple contract system to facilitate player movement over the years. The league is now in its 12th season and we play 3.5 seasons in a calendar year. We have many members who have been around for most of those seasons. This is not an All Star league as we have the same amount of teams as in real life. This forces teams to use all players in the league and makes it, in my mind, more realistic since you have to fill in positions with lower quality players and try to manage around weaknesses. We use 110% usage and have some unlimited players (Players with an OPS of .600 or lower and greater then 50 ABÂ's are unlimited to help with usage.
We are now moving into the expansion phase of Major League baseball and will be expanding at the same time MLB did. We have all ready expanded in 1961 and it went very well. For the 1962 Season we will be adding 2 more teams (Mets and Colt 45's). The Mets are all ready taken and we are looking for someone to take over the Houston franchise. We are about half way through the 1961 season which means that the expansion draft is a mere two months. With the system currently in place it should not take too long far an expansion team to do well. The one adjustment to real life baseball is that we will be using a divisional set-up in 1962 with two rounds of playoffs. This should help keep peoples interest as the 60Â's must have been tough with only one team going to the playoffs out of 10 and a lot of teams out early.
The league website, while not a thing of beauty, is http://www.geocities.com/rich_atlanta_braves/Late20th/1961/1961.htm does have the Constitution there (There have been a few minor changes that are not included) for those who may be interested along with other league information. The teams do not have any relation to the real teams other than the names as this is a full draft league. The contracts page will give you an idea of who is on what teams but more importantly let's you see how the contract system works.
To manage to get through 4 seasons a year the pace is pretty fast. Each interval (block of games) lasts 5 days and each team plays around 8-9 games and would be responsible for playing 4-5 of those games an interval, so while the pace seems fast the amount of games involved to play is relatively few. Also there is some Net Play if you are inclined (about 6-9 owners play) but it is optional. There is a small amount of Auto-play to make sure we get through seasons at the desired pace. We Auto-play the middle 48 games of the season. We begin the season playing the first 57 games as most people love the beginning of the season and we play the last 57 games for the pennant run.
