Subject: Twins @ Pilots Files

The bats of the Twins come alive against their favorite opponent Seattle
at Sicks Stadium. The Twins take 3 of 4 and clobber the baseball for 39
runs in the series. Bill Hands, Ken Holtzman, and Brant Alyea all had
very successful debut appearances for the Twins. But... the Pilots
finally beat the Twins after losing 14 straight games to them.

Game One:

The Twins go up 5-0 in the first on the strength of Rich Reese's homer.
Killebrew gets the first of four walks on the day. That would be all
recently acquired starter Bill Hands would need as he shut out the
Pilots on four hits after coming over from the National League's Chicago
Cubs.

The Twin bats though did not stop until they had scored 14 runs off of
four Seattle pitchers. George Brunet took the loss giving up 7 runs in 3
innings pitched. Recently acquired Brant Alyea made his Twin debut as a
pinch hitter in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, he hit a
monstrous 450 foot shot over the left center wall to score four.

The fleet footed Killebrew stole his third base of the year. The Twins
had 16 total hits.

Minnesota 14 Seattle 0

Game Two:

Harmon Killebrew, who recently went 20 games in a row without a homer,
broke out of his homer slump in big way by hitting three solo homers in
three successive ABS to lead the Twins to a 12-4 victory in Seattle. All
of them came off of his card and his wonderful one column.

Jim Perry went the distance for the Twins to get his tenth win. The
Twins also had homers by Cesar Tover to lead off the game, and by Graig
Nettles. The Twins had 19 total hits.

The Pilots Marty Patten was chased after giving up 4 homers and 7 runs
in 4 and 2/3 innings pitched. The Pilots used three additional pitchers.
Killebrew led all hitters with four hits on the day.

Minnesota 12 Seattle 4

Game Three:

The Twins defense let down rookie starter Dick Woodson as they made two
critical errors in the early going. Killebrew chucked a throw wide to
first base in the first on Tommy Harper's groundball in the first
leading to a run, and then left fielder Graig Nettles missed the cut off
man on a single in the third leading to two more runs. In the bottom of
the fifth, the Twins found themselves down 5-1 and Woodson was in the
showers despite only giving up 2 EARNED runs.

The Twins came back to take the lead with 1 run in the sixth and 4 more
in the seventh as Mr. Ball four blew the lead for Seattle. Once again,
Brant Alyea delivered a big blow with a three run double in the top of
the seventh. He had seven RBI for the series. The Twins were up 6-5 in
the eighth when close Ron Perranoski came into the game. In the ninth,
Pilot catcher Gene McNertney led off with a double and later scored on
J. Pagliaroni's long fly out. The game went into extra innings where in
the bottom of the tenth, Steve Hovely doubled with two out. Dean Chance
came in to relieve Perranoski. The menacing John Kennedy then laced an
eye seeing single to score the winning run. Closer Perranoski took the
loss - his second.

Steve Barber was given credit for the win. The Twins had 10 hits.

Seattle 7 Minnesota 6

Game Four:

Newly acquired pitcher Ken Holtzman thought it was the 1974 world series
as he hit a double and a homerun with 4 RBI to lead the Twins to a 7-2
victory. Holtzman also pitched 6 and 1/3 innings giving up one run to
get the win. Reliever Bob Locker pitched 2 and 2/3 innings to earn his
4th save. The Twins had a total of 6 doubles and 17 hits. Ted Uhlaender
was 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Cesar Tover stole two bases
and now has 29 on the year. Don Mincher hit his 7th homer for the
Pilots.

Twins 7 Seattle 2
