Subject: Reds @ Expos
The Reds are suddenly playing as if they've forgotten they have no chance to succeed this year.... Game 1: Mario Soto (8 IP, 3 hits) allowed 2 stolen bases, 2 doubles & 2 runs in the first inning, but Dave Parker gave the Reds the lead with a 3-run homer in the 3rd. The 3-2 lead lasted until - naturally - the MON 9th when the Cincy pen donated the tying run with only minimal effort required on the Expos' part (walk, walk, wild pitch, sac fly). Eddie Milner & Pete Rose delivered RBI hits in the 12th, and it was good that they both did because the pen gave one of the runs right back. Final score: 5-4. Cincy outhit the Expos 13-7 but spent most of the day LOBbing. Game 2: We choked away a 2-run lead, but the Expos returned the favor and even gave the visitors a 5-4 lead in the 8th. The Reds simply will not tolerate being out-choked, and Tom Hume's 2-out error was followed by the unearned game-losing single off the bat of Fred Lynn. Final score: 6-5. Game 3: Unlikely events abound: Phil Niekro tosses 7+ shutout innings, Tom Browning makes a rare relief appearance and gets 2 outs while facing just 1 batter, Ron Oester & Dave Concepcion both hit their first homers of 1985 (Oester's was inside-the-park after stretching a triple) and the Reds prevail by the score of 4-0. Game 4: The Reds trailed almost from the first batter but scored 3 runs in jaw-dropping fashion in the 9th to erase a 3-2 deficit and register a 5-3 win. The losing runs are charged to Jeff Reardon but he wasn't the primary factor in the amazing comeback. Gary Redus led off the ultimate frame with a triple and Von Hayes then drew a walk. Hayes (100% jump, 85% success) was of course immediately caught stealing, and Mr. Clutch, Dave Parker, could only muster a shallow fly that left Redus still at third base with the game all but over. Fred Lynn to the rescue: Nick Esasky got the game-tying RBI on a blown-x single to center then scored on Buddy Bell's double, but only after Lynn threw the ball away. John Franco retired the Expos in the 9th after making things as difficult as possible for himself, and the Reds escaped with the victory. Alan |
