Subject: Blue Jays @ Mariners
After a dismal 1-4 start to the week, the division-leading (for now) Jays scrape together a couple of close wins.... Game 1: Bill Swift and his 5+ ERA held Toronto to 7 hits and 0 runs in 7.1 innings while TOA starter Bobby Castillo faced nothing but surgical rolls & splits during his brief outing. Final score: 8-0. Castillo, showing rare control while under the knife, walked nobody in his 5.1 innings of work, perhaps because Seattle hitters were too busy swatting the ball all over the place and taking a pitch would have been pointless. Game 2: The Jays were ballparked to death today by the score of 5-3. Three timely gophers, all of the ballpark variety, ruined Toronto's day. The timeliest of the three occurred, naturally, with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth. Game 3: An incredible performance by the TOA offense today, despite winning this 3-1 contest: we stranded SEVENTEEN runners, quite probably a league record for a nine inning game. Tom Henke got the save in relief of Jimmy Key, but only after bringing the losing run to the plate with 2 outs in the 9th (uh oh) then narrowly retiring him thanks to a $ choke. Game 4: The Jays responded to the extreme LOB problem of game 3 by not getting any baserunners at all today. Mike Moore scattered 4 hits over 11 innings and we fared no better against the Seattle bullpen - until George Bell led off the 15th inning with a (ballpark!) home run that enabled us to salvage a 2-1 win. Alexander, Caudill & Davis weren't quite as stingy with the baserunners as the home team's pitchers, but weren't far off either. Alan |
