Subject: Reds @ Giants

After a game one stomping, the Reds get up off the canvas and deliver some unlikely and inexplicable payback....

Game 1: Phil Niekro's luck has been abysmal even by Cincy's incredible standards, and today wasn't any different than usual.  A three-gopher performance (including one to the pitcher) by Niekro sealed his fate, while Bob Knepper's work on the mound was as solid as his Ruthian performance at the plate.  Final score: 4-0.  Knepper held the Reds to 6 hits and 1 walk.  It's not like he was facing the '27 Yankees, but still a good job.

Game 2: HAL's brutal treatment of Frank Pastore so far in 1985 makes Phil Niekro's stats look like Cy Young's.  But today Pastore amazingly allowed just 5 singles and 1 walk in 7 innings and the Reds won by the score of 7-1.  Pastore also got a hit and is now batting .286 (*94* points higher than Gary Redus), suggesting that he and the Reds would be better off with Pastore in left field than on the mound - on most days, anyway.

Game 3: Bill Gullickson's first start for the Reds resulted in a difficult 4-3 win.  Gully allowed just 7 baserunners in his 6 innings (6 singles, 1 walk) but those runners were conveniently bunched so as to produce 3 runs.  Mariano Duncan's clutch single in the 7th - just after the Reds blew the lead - gave us the come-from-behind win after Power & Franco provided 3 scoreless relief innings.

Game 4: Tom Browning took a no-hitter and a 3-0 lead into the seventh - and blew the entire lead on the first hit he allowed.  Browning walked the first 3 hitters of the inning, and the first scored on a groundout.  SFN's first hit came in clutch fashion (as the Reds offense was busy stranding 11 runners) one out later and tied the game at 3.

Cincy retook a 1-run lead in the 8th but choked it away in the bottom of the 9th.  With 2 outs in the 12th, Parker & Bell walked and Pete Rose plated Parker with a single to give the Reds the 5-4 win.  San Fran was limited to just 3 hits in 12 innings, while the Reds drew 11 walks to go with our 7 hits.

Alan
