Subject: Reds @ Pirates
Reds choke big twice in dropping the first two games. Would they make it 3 for 3? Read on if you dare..... Game 1: Cincy trailed 3-2 going into the ninth, having stranded numerous runners in scoring position throughout the contest, but rallied for 3 runs off Pirates ace reliever Wayne Granger. Pinch-hitter Ruben Amaro led off with a single, one out later Alex Johnson doubled him to third, and N.L. All-Star third baseman Tony Perez sent them all home with his 19th big fly of 1969. Judiciously avoiding the use of arsonist Clay Carroll, the Cincy manager brought in the normally-solid Gary Nolan to finish off the reeling Buccos. Three batters later, it was all over. Unfortunately none of those three batters made an out: Willie Stargell led off with his second homer of the game, Manny Sanguillen was hit by a pitch, and Carl Taylor jacked another one over the fence, sealing another patented late-inning Reds choke. Game 2: Unlike game 1, where starters Tony Cloninger and Dock Ellis pitched well, the final two games would feature nothing but offense. Jim McGlothlin and Steve Blass were the victims in this one. The Reds blew 2-0 and 5-2 leads, fought back vainly to tie it at 6, then choked again. The key play came in the Pirate seventh when, with two outs and Willie Stargell on first, Al Oliver doubled to center. Stargell, that well-known speedster (45% chance to score against Tolan's -2 arm) would very likely have been gunned down, but HAL decided that this would be a great time for Tolan to throw the ball away for an error, allowing both Stargell and Oliver to score. Game 3: Cincy rolled out Big Jim Maloney in an effort to stop the massive hemorrhaging, and Maloney responded with easily his most brutal outing of 1969. Fortunately, Luis Tiant wasn't much better, and for once it was the Reds bullpen holding a lead while the Bucco bullpen let one slip away. As usual, Cincy blew 4-0 and 6-4 leads in this game. Trailing 8-6 in the eighth, Tony Perez lofted a 2-run shot over the left field wall to tie the score. In the ninth, Chico Ruiz tripled off Wayne Granger to start the inning and pinch-hitter Jim Beauchamp drove him home with a double (on a HR 1-19, 2B 20 chance), giving the Reds a 9-8 lead. Would the cheap (20) split card draw come back to haunt the Reds? If you've been paying attention, you know damn well it would. .....well actually, this one time, it wouldn't. Jack Billingham allowed a leadoff single to Bill Voss, but somehow retired the next three Pirate batters without incident. Alan |
