Sometimes it seems a guy is just tearing you up and then you add it up and it wasn’t as bad as you thought:
Dave Parker had 11 hits in 17 at bats, 6 runs scored and 8 runs batted in, with 1 double and 3 home runs.
It was as bad as it appeared. I’m pretty sure the Reds would not have won a game without him.
Game 1 Third baseman Vance Law hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the strong Montreal Expos defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 9 to 7 at Riverfront Stadium.
Montreal took the lead for good in the top of the 2nd inning scoring 3 runners on 4 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Ozzie Virgil who silenced the crowd when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 9th of the season). Montreal had 13 hits for the night.
The win went to Ed Lynch (15-4) who allowed 5 runs in 5 innings. Lynch was helped out by Jeff Reardon who recorded his 33rd save. The losing pitcher was Bill Gullickson (12-6).
With this win, Montreal has a division leading 78-45 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With the loss, the Cincinnati ballclub's record is 60-63.
Game 2 Phil Niekro (8-14) and Jay Tibbs (5-10) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with Niekro and the Cincinnati Reds coming out on top of the Montreal Expos 2 to 1.
Cincinnati erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Eddie Milner began the Cincinnati spurt when he lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 5th of the season). Bill Doran next to the plate and he delivered a solo blast (his 10th of the season). Von Hayes then drew a walk. Dave Parker was up next and he grounded into a double play. Montreal made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
John Franco gained credit for his 10th save. 'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Steve Bivens said. 'It's bad enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves, that's really bad.'
Game 3 Vance Law had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at Riverfront Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the Cincinnati Reds 10 to 5.
Cincinnati fell behind quickly as the Montreal offense came through in the first inning as they scored 2 runs on 0 base hits. Jeff Reardon was perfect in the ninth giving him his 34th save on the season.
Andy McGaffigan (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 5 runs. Ron Robinson (2-4) ended up with the loss. He gave up 7 runs and 8 hits in 7 innings.
Game 4 19,512 fans were treated to a fine game at Riverfront Stadium as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The Cincinnati Reds won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
In the 5th inning Cincinnati scored 2 runs. The key at-bat was by Dave Parker who elicited a roar from the hometown fans when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 31st of the season). Frank Pastore (3-4) was helped out by Ted Power who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 10th save.
The losing pitcher was Tom Seaver (12-11). He gave up 10 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.
