Subject: Senators at Twins

Game 1

Third baseman Ken McMullen had 2 base hits and George Brunet pitched 8 and two

third strong innings as the Washington Senators outscored the Minnesota Twins

3 to 1.

Washington took the lead for good in the 5th inning scoring one runner on 2

hits.  McMullen slapped a single.  Ken Hamlin next to the plate and he laced

a single.  Brunet then laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Vic Davalillo followed

and he hit a deep fly scoring the run.  Minnesota made it exciting in the

9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

The victory was credited to Brunet (5-2) who went 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1

run. Brunet was helped out by Ted Abernathy who recorded his 10th save.

Mudcat Grant (3-2) took the loss.  He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings giving up 7

hits and 2 walks.

Minnesota's manager was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts.

If our guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won

that one.  That is what really ticks me off!'

Game 2

Johnny Callison had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Washington Senators topped the

Minnesota Twins in 10 innings by a score of 6 to 5 at Metropolitan

Stadium.

The score was tied at 5 after nine.  Washington ended up winning it in the

10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Ron Brand drew a walk.  One out

later, Callison stepped up to the plate and he tripled scoring the run.  The

Minnesota bats were silent in the bottom of the 10th.

Ted Abernathy (2-2) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory.

Jim Merritt (2-1) absorbed the loss in relief.  He surrendered 3 runs in 3

innings and saw his ERA increase from 3.05 to 3.80.

Game 3

36,159 fans watched an exciting game at Metropolitan Stadium.  The Minnesota

Twins topped the Washington Senators by the slimmest of margins, 6 to

5.

Gary Bell (4-1) was the winning pitcher in relief.  He surrendered 1 hit and 1

walk in 1 and 1/3 innings lowering his ERA to 3.86.  Washington had a chance

to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Frank Kreutzer (0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.  'We lose our

concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Washington 's manager said

after the game.  'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say they have to

concentrate on EVERY pitch.'
