Game 1 Alex Trevino cracked 2 homeruns as the Montreal Expos topped the hapless Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 6 to 1 at Wrigley Field.
Trevino was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 1st inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 2nd of the season) in the 3rd inning. After the 3rd inning, neither team was able to score.
Andy McGaffigan (2-1) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 8 innings. Dave Lapoint (6-18) was charged with the loss. He was unable to retire a batter allowing 3 hits and 2 walks.
Game 2 The Montreal Expos defeated the pathetic Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 4 to 1 at Wrigley Field.
Tom Seaver (13-11) had a solid outing for Montreal . He went 8 innings surrendering 6 hits and 1 walk. The Chicago NL bats were silent in the bottom of the 9th.
Jeff Reardon was credited with his 35th save. Mike Witt (12-14) absorbed the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 8 innings.
Game 3 Bryn Smith went 8 strong innings and right fielder Harold Baines collected 2 extra-base hits at Wrigley Field where the indomitable Montreal Expos beat the pitiful Chicago NL Cubs by the score of 4 to 0.
Smith (18-4) was on top of his game. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. Montreal had 8 hits for the game and Chicago NL had 3.
Burt Hooton (4-9) took the loss. The Montreal ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 83-50. With this loss, Chicago NL has a 4-6 record of late, 50-83, worst in the division overall.
Game 4 Luis Aguayo blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI and Ed Lynch had a strong outing at Wrigley Field as the Montreal Expos beat the dreadful Chicago NL Cubs 11 to 2.
Montreal took the lead for keeps in the top of the 4th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Mike Schmidt led off and he reached on an error. After another out, Ozzie Virgil followed, but he was set down on strikes. Bill Laskey then threw a high and inside pitch that got by the catcher; it was ruled a passed ball. Harold Baines was up next and he was walked intentionally. Spike Owen came to the plate and slapped a one-base hit. Owen took second on the throw. Lynch continued the rally and ripped a base-knock. For the game Montreal out-hit Chicago NL 17 to 5.
Lynch (17-4) was the winner allowing no runs in 5 innings. Laskey (1-13) ended up with the loss. He was unable to control the Montreal offense and allowed 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
With this win, Montreal has a division leading 84-50 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss Chicago NL now has a record of 50-84, worst in the division.
