At Municipal Stadium the Kansas City A's outscored the New York AL Yankees 9
to 6.

Kansas City had 3 runs cross the plate in the 6th inning.  The critical plate
appearance was by Dick Allen who brought the crowd to their feet when he
doubled clearing all three ducks off the pond.  New York AL was set down
quietly in the 9th.

Jim Dickson(3-2) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.
Al Downing(2-6) was the loser.  He was unable to control the Kansas City
offense and allowed 9 hits and 5 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Sam McDowell mowed down 11 Kansas City batters at Municipal Stadium where the
New York AL Yankees beat the Kansas City A's 4 to 1.

McDowell(6-2) was very good in the win.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 8 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings.  Neither team managed to score after the
4th inning.

Pedro Ramos recorded his 5th save.  Catfish Hunter(0-1) was the losing
pitcher.  He gave up 4 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.  Kansas City's manager
was impressed with McDowell and his 11 strikeouts.  'It's tough to generate
runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'

They almost ran out of baseballs at Municipal Stadium as New York AL Yankees
clobbered the Kansas City A's pitching staff, scoring 11 runs while Whitey
Ford(3-7), with relief help from Ralph Terry, surrendered 3 runs to Kansas
City.

New York AL wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring 4
runners on 4 hits.  That early run support was enough for Ford and New York
AL.  New York AL ended up with 12 hits for the game while Kansas City had 7.

Bill Stafford(0-3) was the loser.  His ERA ballooned from 4.56 to 5.22 as he
allowed 4 runs in 2/3 of an inning.
