Game 1 Second baseman Johnny Ray had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Montreal Expos by a score of 2 to 1 at Three Rivers Stadium.
Mike Bielecki (1-1) got the win with a steady relief outing. He surrendered 2 hits and no walks in 1 and 1/3 innings lowering his ERA from 9.00 to 3.86. Montreal went down without a fight in the 9th.
Bielecki got help from Bruce Sutter who earned his 27th save. Tim Burke (5-7) was the loser in relief. He pitched 2 innings allowing 2 hits and 1 walk.
Game 2 Second baseman Tony Bernazard had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the spectacular Montreal Expos beat the pathetic Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings by a score of 6 to 5.
Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Montreal came out the victor in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Bernazard ripped a solo home run (his 5th of the season). Vance Law got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Mike Schmidt then laced a single. For the game Montreal out-hit Pittsburgh 13 to 10.
Juan Agosto (3-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Tim Burke recorded his 4th save. Bruce Sutter (0-7) suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in 2 innings.
Game 3 Tom Seaver was handed a 4-0 lead but he couldn’t hold it as Roy Smalley slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI at Three Rivers Stadium where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Montreal Expos 5 to 4.
Montreal was unable to claim the lead after Pittsburgh went ahead in the bottom of the 4th inning with 2 runs using 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Denny Gonzalez keyed the rally when he laced a one-base hit. Rick Reuschel stepped into the batter's box and he doubled. After another out, Jerry Royster stepped up to the plate and he delivered a base-hit. Smalley followed and he singled. Sid Bream got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again.
Reuschel (13-9) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 4 runs. Reuschel was helped out by Ron Mathis who recorded his 1st save. Tom Seaver (14-12) was tagged with the loss.
Game 4 In a close game the spectacular Montreal Expos got by the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 8 to 6.
Montreal scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 8th inning as they scored 5 runs on 3 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Denny Walling who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he doubled scoring two baserunners. Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The win was credited to Tim Burke (6-7) who went 2 innings allowing 1 run. Jeff Reardon recorded his 38th save. The loss was charged to Larry McWilliams (0-1) in relief. He was unable to retire a batter and surrendered 1 hit and no walks.
Montreal continued their winnings ways improving their record to a division leading 90-52. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. With the loss, Pittsburgh has a record of 4-6 lately, 58-84 overall.
