Subject: White Sox @ Senators
Is there anything better than July 4 baseball in the nation's capitol? Why, as a matter of fact, yes, there is... Game 1 -- Bill Stoneman made his White Sox debut versus Joe Coleman. (STONEman vs. COLEman -- it's the Steve Austin game!) Anyway, the Sox jumped on top with two in the first, eventually opening up a 4-1 lead in the 3rd. But Mike Epstein's 2-run double in the bottom of the 3rd brought the Senators to within one, and Del Unser's RBI 1b in the 4th tied it. But Syd O'Brien, starting in place of the ineffective (and demoted) Pete Ward homered in the 6th, to give the Sox a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish. Dan Osinski got the last two outs to record his 5th save. Game 2 -- Frank Howard cranked two homers to delight the Washington faithful on July 4 in support of Casey Cox. But even then, the Sox had the winning run at bat in the top of the ninth, but Bob Humphreys slammed the door, finishing off a 7-6 win for the Senators. Game 3 -- Jim Hannan started for the Sens, but was chased in the 5th after yielding only 3 runs. Frank Howard's 2nd homer of this game tied it up in the 8th, and a Ken McMullen single gave the Washingtons a 5-4 lead. But in the top of the ninth, Luis Aparicio scored on Paul Casanova's 3rd passed ball of the game to tie it up, and Ron Hansen's PH single plated the final run in a 6-5 White Sox win. Wilbur Wood got the win over a host of Senators relievers (Moore, Jackson, Humphreys, May, and Baldwin). Game 4 -- With the bullpen tired, the Senators pinned their hopes on Dick Bosman to give them some quality innings. He did give them 4 quality innings, at least, but not until after the 1st, when the Sox took a 4 run lead on two X-Chart hits, a walk, a bases-clearing double by Curt Blefary, and an RBI single by Jay Johnstone. The Senators made it close late; Frank Howard drove in 2 on a double, then came around to score on a Duane Josephson passed ball, which made the score 7-5. But the Sox held on, winning game 4 behind Jim Bunning 8-5, and taking 3 out of 4 from the Senators. Game files to follow this week -- probably Tuesday. |
