Subject: Montreal at Cincinnati Week 13
Montreal somehow wins game two behind the pitching of Gerald Nyman. Expo GM Bivens is laughing all the way to the bank... Reds win two of three. McGlothlin has a one-hitter in third game. Hit came in 4th by K. Collins. New Computer manager attached with recently acquired Mike Marshall on the roster for week 14. Game 1 Alex Johnson slammed a homerun and had 5 RBI at Crosley Field where the Cincinnati Reds beat the Montreal Expos by the score of 15 to 7. Johnson provided much of the offense. He belted a three-run homer (his 12th of the season) in the 3rd inning and stroked a one-base hit in the 5th inning. Cincinnati kept the scorekeepers busy in the 5th inning with 9 runs on 9 hits. Cincinnati out-hit Montreal for the game, 15 hits to 12. The win went to Tony Cloninger(6-6) who allowed 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. Gary Waslewski(2-9) was charged with the loss. He was unable to control the Cincinnati offense and allowed 10 hits and 4 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings. Game 2 39,739 fans watched an exciting game at Crosley Field. The Montreal Expos topped the Cincinnati Reds by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. Gerald Nyman(1-0) had a solid outing for Montreal. He went 5 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 walks. Cincinnati had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Jack Aker got the save, his 20th. Fred Talbot(5-6) absorbed the loss. He gave up 8 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. 'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Alan Boodman after the game. 'We lost this game tonight because we didn't follow the instructions every Little Leaguer hears every day.' Game 3 Jim McGlothlin allowed only 1 hit resulting in a big goose egg on the scoreboard for Montreal as the Cincinnati Reds outscored the Montreal Expos 3 to 0. McGlothlin(3-6) was tremendous on the mound for Cincinnati. He gave up just 1 hit and 3 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.02 to 2.80. Cincinnati had only 5 hits for the afternoon. Mike Wegener(6-9) ended up with the loss. When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Wegener was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. McGlothlin brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game! |
