Subject: 1945 World Series Results

The Brooklyn Dodgers showed up in Detroit to start the 1945 World Series for what looked like two evenly matched teams. It didn't turn out that way, but only because I caught every split and Robert couldn't get a split for his life. The teams are much more balanced than this series showed.

Game 1: Brooklyn got to Bob Friend early, scoring 3 runs in the 2nd inning courtesy of Robin Roberts two run home run and a suicide squeeze courtesy of Bill Virdon. Friend settled down and held them at bay for the next 4 innings. In the 5th, the Tigers cut it to a 3-2 deficit when Bob Speake launched a 2 run home run. Don Mossi pitched 2 scoreless innings for the Tigers bringing us to the 9th. Don Bessent tried to close it out for the Dodgers, but he only got 2 outs. Bill Tuttle walked and was erased on a fielders choice with Bob Speake taking his place at first base. An out later, Eddie Waitkus pinch hit for Red Wilson and launched a 2 run walk-off jobber to win it for Detroit. He was later shot in his room by a crazed ex-lover :o) Tigers
Game 2: Another close one. Don Newcombe and Billy Hoeft squared off, but niether of them were at their best. The Dodgers once again struck first with 3 in the 2nd inning. Don Newcombe singled in a run and Pee Wee Reese tripled home a pair. Bob Speake hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 2. It stayed that way until the 6th when Al Kaline launched a 3 run home run to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead. Carl Furillo tied it back up the following half inning with an rbi single. In the bottom of the 7th Detroit got an rbi single from Jerry Lynch to give them their one run lead back. Ray Narleski pitched the final two innings for Detroit holding the Tigers slim lead and they go on to win 5-4.

Game 3: A good start from a Tigers starting pitcher as Frank Lary goes the distance, allowing 1 run on 6 hits and 3 walks. The offense was supplied mostly by Eddie Matthews and Bill Tuttle who each hit 2 run home runs. Eddie Waitkus had another rbi pinch hit, this time just a single as he plays through his injury. Walt Moryn had an rbi single for Brooklyn's lone run. Detroit led 4-1 by the 5th inning and did not falter. 5-1 Tigers win.

Game 4: This was a blood bath for pitchers through the first 3 innings. It was 5-5 after 3 with both starters (Erskine and Gromek) being done by 3. The difference was the bullpen in this one. Al Aber, Roger Craig, Virgil Trucks and Ray Narleski pitched 6 scoreless innings for the Tigers and the Dodgers bullpen couldn't stop the bleeding. Detroit scored 4 in the 6th, 3 more in the 7th and another in the 8th. The Tigers got home runs from Eddie Matthews, Al Kaline and Stan Lopata. Lopata had 4rbi. Eddie Waitkus had yet another pinch hit rbi single. Detoit had 13 hits to the Dodgers 12, but the longball was the difference. Tigers win 13-5.

The longball proved to be the deciding factor in the series, with Detroit outhomering the Dodgers 9-1. Robin Roberts had the only Brooklyn home run.
Much thanks to Robert for a well played series and excellent sportsmanship even when splits were going against him by a large margin. On the bright side, his Dodgers will continue to be excellent next season and the Tigers will try to stay out of thecellar.
