All the games were close.
Game 1 Ron Darling came through with a solid 8 innings at Shea Stadium as the New York NL Mets beat the Montreal Expos in 11 innings by the count of 3 to 2.
The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. New York NL ended up winning it in the 11th inning. After two outs Howard Johnson lashed a single. Wilson was safe at second on a stolen base. Lenny Dykstra then doubled making New York NL the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. For the game New York NL out-hit Montreal 9 to 5.
Rick Anderson (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing no runs. Tim Burke (3-2) was the losing pitcher in relief.
Game 2 Floyd Youmans went the distance as the Montreal Expos defeated the New York NL Mets by the score of 2 to 1 at Shea Stadium.
The game started off with Montreal taking the lead in the first with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Tony Bernazard got things going when he drew a walk. Mitch Webster followed and he ripped a base-knock. One out later, Andres Galarraga came up and he delivered a one-base hit. Vance Law stepped in and he delivered a single, and an error was also committed. That was all the offense they were to need. After the 1st inning, neither team was able to score.
Youmans (4-1) allowed 1 run on the game. Bob Ojeda (1-2) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 7 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 walk.
The Montreal ballclub's record now stands at 16-10. With the loss New York NL now has a record of 14-9. [2]
Game 3 In a game for the baseball purist, Mike Scott (3-1) and Neal Heaton (1-3) squared off in a tense pitching duel, New York NL Mets finally emerged victorious over Montreal Expos, 3 to 1.
Scott delivered a fine performance for New York NL. He went 8 innings allowing 8 hits and 1 walk lowering his ERA from 4.67 to 3.86. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.
Scott got help from Jesse Orosco who was credited with his 5th save.
Game 4 Dwight Gooden had a strong outing as the New York NL Mets defeated the Montreal Expos by the score of 5 to 4 at Shea Stadium.
New York NL brought 4 runs across the plate in the 5th inning with the help of 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Darryl Strawberry who made the crowd come alive when he doubled clearing all three ducks off the pond. Montreal had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Gooden (4-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 3 runs. Roger McDowell was credited with his 4th save. Jay Tibbs (3-2) was the losing pitcher.
'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Steve Bivens said. 'We did what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?' And HAL didn’t do us any favors the entire series!
