Game 1 Tommy Herr jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Montreal Expos in 10 innings by the score of 6 to 5 at Busch Stadium.
The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. Finally, St. Louis pulled the game out in the 10th inning. Tito Landrum singled. Landrum was safe at second on a stolen base. Two outs later Gary Redus stepped in and he doubled making St. Louis the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.
Todd Worrell (2-1) got the win allowing 1 run in 2 and 2/3 innings. Dennis Martinez (1-1) was the loser in relief. His ERA increased from 1.64 to 1.98 as he allowed 1 run in 2 and 2/3 innings.
Game 2 One run was the difference at Busch Stadium as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Montreal Expos 3 to 2.
St. Louis brought 2 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning. Montreal made it exciting in the 9th (translation: Baines had a homerun 1-19 but drew a 20), but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Danny Cox (3-2) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Todd Worrell got the save, his 6th. The losing pitcher was Jay Tibbs (3-3).
The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands at 13-17. With this loss, Montreal has a 4-6 record of late, 17-16 overall.
Game 3 The Montreal Expos had an easy time of it at Busch Stadium defeating the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 12 to 7.
Bryn Smith (2-2) got the win but did not look spectacular. He gave up 7 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings. Montreal dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.
Dennis Leonard (1-4) was the loser. The Montreal ballclub's record now stands at 18-16. With this loss, St. Louis has a 4-6 record of late, 13-18 overall.
Game 4 Charlie Puleo went 8 strong innings at Busch Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 5 to 0.
Montreal claimed the early lead in the first inning when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. That was all the runs Puleo (1-0) needed. Montreal ended up with 10 hits for the game while St. Louis had 3.
Greg Mathews (2-3) was given the loss. Montreal now has a record of 19-16. With the loss, St. Louis has a record of 4-6 lately, 13-19 overall.
