Subject: SFN at CIN
The Giants, feeling good about their quick start in '86, travel to Cincinnati to take on the Reds in an important early season matchup. Both teams are tied atop the NL West.
In the first game, the young Giants racked up two runs in the first inning off of Cincy starter Bill Gullickson. However, the Reds come back with a 4-spot against Kelly Downs. The two rivals battled back and forth, but ultimately Cincy would hold on for a 9-8 victory. The heart of the Reds lineup (Von Hayes, Eric Davis, Dave Parker, and Kal Daniels) each collected two hits. Chili Davis and Juan Samuel each got three hits for SF. Game two was the Joe Cowley Show, as the portly right-hander blanked the Giants through seven innings of two hit ball, and doubled in two runs himself. Reds take it 6-2. Scott Garrelts gets blasted again, dropping to 1-5 with a 5.68 ERA, forcing SF management to question his spot in the starting rotation. We were counting on him for big things this year, but the early returns are not good. The Giants rush out to a nice 5-1 run against Jose Rijo, continually hitting his 5-9, 5-10 counts for extra base hits. Cincy was missing split count after split count, and once the brilliant Eric Davis butchered an easy fly ball for an error, the Giants were sure momentum in the series had changed. It, uh, then changed again real quick as Cincy gets to Mike Krukow for 2 runs in the 5th, the 7th, and 8th to pull out a come from behind win 7-5. Dave Parker knocks in three for Cincy, and Mariano Duncan and Jim Pankovits (!) each hit homers. The Giants were desperate to pull at least one win out, and were confident in sending Bob Knepper (6-1, 2.49 ERA) to the mound. Reds countered with Tom Browning. Each team scored 2 in the first, but the Reds got to Knepper in a big way in the 5th, putting up 4 runs to take a 6-2 lead. SF answered in the top of the 6th with 3 runs, making it 6-5, but Cincy pulled away again with 2 more in the bottom half of the inning to an 8-5 lead. SF continued to battle, scoring two more in their half of the 7th to pull back to within 1 run, but a 3 run 8th for Cincy erased all doubt, and Cincy takes an exciting battle 11-7. Eric Davis was 4 for 5 with 3 runs and 3 RBis, and Dave Parker also knocked in 3. Juan Samuel was 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs for SF. This caps an exceptional week for the Reds, coming off their three game sweep of the Mets. Broom sales in the Greater Cincinnati area are reported to be 'booming' :-)
