Boston struggles but manages to sweep the Brew Crew. With a little help from the split Gods it would have been an easier sweep. Game 1: Back to back triples followed by a double (splits of 17,18 and 19) gave Boston a 2-1 lead in the 4th. A bases loaded single by Cruz tied it in the bottom of the 4th and when Wally Joyner ran through the stop sign it looked like the inning would be over (HAL sent the 1-10 against Dwight Evans). The plate turned out ok when Evans threw the ball away allowing 2 more runs to score and Milwaukee had a 4-2 lead. Boston got single runs in the 6th,7th and 8th to take a 5-4 lead. Bedrosian came in with one out and almost pulled a "double Sambito". Jackson rolled a 5-9 but missed the 1-13 homer for out #2. Pinch hitter Greg Brock then rolled a 2-4 for a game tying homer. A couple more Boston errors helped Milwaukee load the bases in the 10th but Bedrosian avoided the complete meltdown by getting Gantner to pop out to end the inning. Barrett led off the 11th with a single, stole second and moved to 3rd on a sac bunt. HAL left Clutterbuck in to face Boggs (57% on base) and Boggs came through with a single to give Boston the lead. Tekulve pitched the 11th to save the 6-5 win. Boston had several chances earlier but Dale (4e40) Sveum got splits of 16,19, and 20 on his x plays with runners on. Game 2: Roger Clemens went the distance and tossed a 6 hit shutout. The offense came from Reid Nichols who blasted a pair of solo homers in the 3-0 win. Game 3: Salazar started for Barrett at 2nd and it paid immediate dividends as the first roll was a 2-3 double. Boggs singled and the 1-15 salazar was sent home. 2 splits of 16 later and Salazar was out at home. Jaime Quirk then got a 6 on a 1-6 hr chance to start the bottom of the first. Dwight Evans missed a hr in the 5th, settling for a 2 run double and then scored on a Rice sac fly to give Boston a 4-1 lead. Nipper allowed 2 more runs, one on yet another home run but the bullpen worked 2 shutout innings to save the 4-3 win. |
