Subject: Tigers @ Pilots

Detroit takes two of three, in an offensively-oriented series.

Game 1: This was the real slugfest, as both teams generously blew 3 run
leads, but in the end the Pilots bullpen (specifically John O'Donoghue)
proved more feeble than Detroit's. The Tigers prevailed 10-7 as the clubs
combined for 26 hits (but only 1 home run, by Norm Cash).

Seattle had taken a 7-6 lead in the eighth on John Donaldson's pinch-single,
but O'Donoghue gave up 3 runs to the Tigers in the ninth before he ever
retired a batter. With runners on first and second, Mickey Stanley
attempted to bunt the runners up, but the lead-footed Willie Horton somehow
beat the rap at third, and Al Kaline cleared the bases with a double to
left. An Ike Brown double two outs later capped the inning.

Pat Dobson managed to vulture his eighth win of the season for Detroit,
while O'Donoghue drops to 0-6.

Game 2: Tom Murphy and Gene Brabender hooked up in an almost-pitchers-duel,
though both hurlers settled for no-decisons. Detroit scored two early runs,
but the Pilots tied it up in the seventh on a two-run Tommy Harper HR (1-3,
fbB 4-20) off Murphy's card. The Tigers got those runs right back the next
inning on three consecutive singles and a sac fly.

In the bottom of the ninth, Murphy allowed two baserunners sandwiched around
an out, at which point relief ace Tom Timmerman (who had blown only 1 save
in 1969) was summoned from the pen. Bill Melton picked an excellent time to
boot Tommy Harper's grounder, thereby loading the bases. Wayne Comer struck
out, leaving it all up to Tommy Davis.

At this time I would like to point out that Davis (a weak hitter,
power-wise) had zero homers in 1969 so far, therefore a two-out,
bottom-of-the-ninth, game-ending grand slam was very likely out of the
question.

Until he rolled a 3-4. No problem: he still needs a 1 split, otherwise it's
a harmless flyout. So he gets the 1, of course. No problem: he can still
be robbed of the homer by Gold Glove centerfielder Mickey Stanley. Only HAL
decides that Willie Horton is going to be the one to make the play in
left-center. Now we have a problem because Willie plays leftfield in a
wheelchair. Final score: 6-4 and the hometown fans go nuts.

Game 3: Hard-luck Denny McLain takes the mound for Detroit and finally gets
a little support in a 9-3 victory. When the game was close early, McLain
provided his own offense, getting hits his first 3 times up and batting in 3
runs.

With Detroit on top 2-1 (thanks to McLain's bat) in the third, Tommy Harper
stretched a triple into an inside-the park home run. The Tigers would match
that (sort of) in the next inning, when Bill Melton lined a hit under Tommy
Davis' glove in left field, chasing home two runners and managing to touch
all the bases himself as Davis dribbled the ball around out there. The
Seattle scorer charitably called it a single and a 3-base error.

Melton would later hit a "real" 3-run homer off Jerry Robertson, who made a
rather ugly debut in a Pilot uniform.
