Subject: Twins & Royals
The Twins take advantage of seven Royal errors, seven stolen bases, and some clutch pitching to sweep the Royals in Kansas City. The Royals wasted fine pitching performances from Wally "No-Hit" Bunker, and Bill Butler in the process. The Royal bats could only muster 6 runs in the series. Game One: Twins 5 Royals 3 The Twins got off to a 4-0 lead as they took advantage of three hits, a walk, an error by SS Hernandez, and FOUR stolen bases. With Cesar Tovar on third, Rod Carew stole second without a throw from Royal catcher Ed Kirkpatrick. Tony Oliva then singled both home. Killebrew was walked. After a wild pitch, the error by Hernandezand two more stolen bases, it was 4-0. The Twins hung on for 5-3 victory as Royal starter Roger Nelson more or less shut the Twins down after the first inning. In the eighth and ninth innings pinch hitter Hawk Taylor and 3B Bob Oliver hit solo homers before Twin starter Bill Hands gave way to Ron Perranoski. Perranoski pitched 2/3 of an inning to earn his 23rd save. Tovar, Carew, Oliva, Cardenas, and Roseboro all had stolen bases. Game Two: Twins 7 Royals 1 Jim Perry and Wally Bunker had a gem of a pitcher's duel going through six as the first score did not occur until the top of the seventh when doubles by Leo Cardenas and John Roseboro put the Twins up 1-0. In the bottom of the seventh, Deron Johnson hit his 31st homer in the the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. In the top of the eighth, Mike Hedlund relieved Bunker and promptly gave up a homer to Tony Oliva - which turned out to be the game winner. The Twins added five runs in the top of the ninth off of 3 Royal relievers. Perry won his 13th while Hedlund lost his 10th. The Twins stole three more bases, and the Royals made three more errors. Game Three: Twins 3 Royals 2 The Twins survived Dave Boswell not having his best stuff to win an exciting 3-2 game. The Royals had 9 hits and 3 walks off of Boswell, but could only bring 2 home in 4 and 2/3 before Boswell gave way to Tom "the Blade" Hall. The Royals had runners on first and second with one out in the first (DP), first and third with two out in the second (K), scored one run on three hits and a walk in the third, had runners on first and third in the fourth, and scored one run on three hits in the fifth. Hall, Bob Locker, and Ron Perranoski shut the Royals down the rest of the way. Royal starter Bill Butler gave up three runs on six hits over 8 innings to take the tough loss. The game winning hit was a solo homer by Bob Allison in the top of the seventh. |
