There were a lot of runs scored, not much pitching, two games went extra innings and all four games were decided by a single run:
Game 1 The Montreal Expos edged the San Diego Padres in 10 innings at Jack Murphy Stadium by the score of 6 to 5.
Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Montreal came out the victor in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Harold Baines smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly'. One out later, Steve Jeltz stepped up to the plate and he doubled. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.
The win was credited to Tim Burke (6-3) who went 2 innings allowing no runs. Burke got help from Jeff Reardon who was credited with his 20th save. Lance McCullers (3-3) was tagged with the loss in relief. He pitched 3 innings giving up 3 hits and 1 walk.
Game 2 Center fielder Ruppert Jones rocketed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the San Diego Padres beat the Montreal Expos by a score of 10 to 9.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Jones. He tripled which plated a run in the 1st inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 5th inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 6th inning. San Diego had a total of 13 hits for the game.
Gene Walter (5-3) got the win allowing 3 runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Tom Hume was credited with his 2nd save. Andy McGaffigan (9-4) was hit with the loss in relief.
Game 3 Tim Raines had 4 hits at Jack Murphy Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the San Diego Padres in 12 innings 9 to 8.
The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Montreal ended up winning it in the 12th inning. The crucial at-bat was provided by Mike Schmidt who silenced Jack Murphy Stadium as he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run. It was roller coaster of a game as the lead change hands 5 times.
Mark Huismann (3-1) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Lamarr Hoyt (5-4) was the loser in relief. He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 4 hits and no walks.
Ruppert Jones smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI but it wasn't enough for San Diego.
Game 4 Tim Raines had 2 base hits as the Montreal Expos defeated the San Diego Padres 2 to 1 at Jack Murphy Stadium.
San Diego was unable to recover after Montreal went ahead in the 3rd inning scoring one runner utilizing 2 base hits. San Diego had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
The victory was credited to Neal Heaton (9-6) who went 7 innings, allowing 1 run. Jeff Reardon earned his 21st save. Eric Show (7-4) absorbed the loss. He surrendered 2 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings.
