Reds take the opener, and it's The Tom Browning Show as the he spaces out 10 hits to allow only 1 run, and brings in 3 himself with a crucial 5th inning, bases loaded double. SF's Mike Krukow hit hard in this one, for 11 hits and 7 runs. 7-1 Redlegs win. SF's Kelly Downs and Cincy's Ted Power had quite an even duel going, a 3-3 game after 8 innings. Downs showed some incredible intestinal fortitude by shaking off not one, but two, line drives that hit him yet were turned into groundouts by his slick fielders. He was removed for a pinch-hitter in top of the 9th, but Scott Garrelts came in and sent down the Reds in style, striking out all three batters to send it into extra innings. Ted "Staying" Power had one more inning in him, and he put the Giants out in order in the top of the 10th. Von Hayes singled and stole second to open the bottom of the 10th. Garrelts got the next two batters, but big Dave Parker stepped up to the situation, and cracked a single to bring home Hayes with the winning run. 4-3 Reds again.
Reds jump all over SF ace Bob Knepper, and rack up 5 runs in the first two innings. Home runs by Eric Davis and Nick Esasky helped stake Cincy to the early lead. They coast to a 6-3 victory. Unlikely hero for Cincy was Tracey Jones, who went 3 for 4 with a run and 2 RBIs. Joe Cowley picks up win #11 with a 7 inning quality start. The finale looked like SF's time to shine, as"Big Daddy" Rick Reuschel held the mighty Reds offense at bay (1 run allowed through 6 innings), and a Chili Davis home run along with several other clutch hits gave SF a nice 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the 7th. SF's reliever Frank Williams, who has been practically lights out all season, entered the game, and promptly gave up a couple of walks, a two-run single to Joel Youngblood, and a triple to Eddie Milner, tying the game at 4. John Franco set down SF in the 9th, but a couple of Dan Gladden fielding miscues (Dan's range ain't what it used to be) opened the floodgates for 4 more runs. Reds win 8-4 and complete the sweep.
