Subject: Blue Jays @ Red Sox
Two teams that are close in talent (Boston's only a little bit behind now) but light years apart in luck meet at Fenway and the outcome is entirely predictable. After yet another patently absurd choke in the opener, the Toronto offense leaves town and the Jays forfeit the remainder of the series.... Game 1: The Jays built an early 5-2 lead and were ahead 6-3 into the late innings, at which point Aurelio Lopez achieved the "Perfect Sambito" in the 8th with a 2-out, 3-run gopher to the first batter he faced that entirely erased the lead. Then in the 9th, 2 batters came to the plate for Boston, the Jays choked up 2 errors, and the final score was 7-6. Game 2: Jimmy Key scatters 9 hits (all singles, no gophers!) in 7 innings, but not quite well enough; the TOA offense doesn't score until the 9th and comes up with our league-leading 26th one run loss of 1986. Final score: 2-1. Game 3: Another nightmare game where the dice rolls stagger the imagination, epitomized by (among many other ways) Rich Gedman stealing a base. The most talented offense in the majors musters all of 3 hits, and loses by the score of 6-2. Game 4: A repeat of game 2: chalk up one-run loss #27 with another 2-1 final. Alan |
