Pittsburgh jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring one runner on 3 hits. After two outs Jim Morrison laced a base-knock. Garvey stepped up next and he laced a single. Jerry Royster then laced a one-base hit. Pittsburgh rapped out 7 hits for the night.

Game 2 Left fielder Tim Raines hit one over the fence and had 4 RBI at Three Rivers Stadium where the strong Montreal Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 13 innings 5 to 1.
The score was a scoreless tie after nine. Montreal came out on top in the 13th inning. The highlight belonged to Raines who silenced Three Rivers Stadium as he belted a three-run homer. Montreal had 11 hits for the night.
The winning pitcher was Mark Huismann (7-4) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Jim Winn (2-2) was charged with the loss in relief.
Game 3 Second baseman Tony Bernazard hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI at Three Rivers Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 9 to 5.
Montreal started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first plating an isolated run. After an out was recorded, Bernazard single-handedly provided the offense with a solo home run. One out later, Mike Schmidt came to the plate and drew a walk. Pittsburgh scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept them from victory.
The win went to Bryn Smith (10-11) who allowed 3 runs in 6 innings. Rick Rodriguez (1-1) was the loser. His biggest problem was control as he allowed 6 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
Game 4 Jim Morrison lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI at Three Rivers Stadium as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Montreal Expos 6 to 5.
Pittsburgh tallied 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning with the help of 4 hits. They would be enough to earn the win. Montreal threatened in the 9th but Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally.
The winning pitcher was Alfonso Polido (2-0) who allowed 2 runs in 6 innings. Pulido got help from Cecilio Guante who was credited with his 5th save. Juan Nieves (7-11) was the loser. He pitched 5 innings allowing 6 hits and 1 walk.
'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Pulido, 'I was just giving us a chance to win.'
