Subject: NLCS games 1 & 2

Games 1 & 2 were played online last night, and the series is scheduled to resume this evening.

Game 1: Back in the playoffs for the first time since 1981, the Reds showed some jitters early in game 1.  Normally sure-handed Bill Doran committed a 2-out error which handed the Mets a run in the first inning, and Barry Larkin's second blown-x of the game in the third extended the visitors' lead to 3-0.

Cincy got a run back in the bottom of the third, but neither team would score again; the 2 "x" runs donated by our defense provided the difference in the 3-1 outcome.

Mike Scott was brutally efficient on the mound for the Mets, scattering 4 hits in 8 innings while walking just 1 and fanning 10 Reds.  It helped that 19 of the 28 batters Scott faced rolled on the pitcher's card while only 9 Reds batters could find their own cards (and one of those 9 was the pitcher).

Jesse Orosco faced 3 batters in the 9th to earn the save for New York.

The NYN strategy against Cincy starter Joe Cowley seemed to be to take a lot of pitches: Cowley fanned 8 but walked 6 in his 6-inning stint although he allowed only 4 hits.

============================================================

Game 2: Today the Reds benefited from some uncharacteristic shakiness on the part of Mets starter Doc Gooden, though things started well for NYN.  Cincy starter Tom Browning committed an error on the first postseason batter he ever faced, but escaped trouble when Phil Garner hit into a DP.

New York took a 1-0 lead on Ray Knight's 2-out RBI double in the second but the Reds came back in the 3rd with a pair of our own RBI doubles that produced a 2-1 lead.

In the CIN 4th, the inning opened with 3 consecutive singles from our 6-7-8 hitters, and Gooden threw away Browning's bunt for a 2-base error, making the score 4-1 and a sac fly gave the Reds a 5-1 lead later in the inning.

Gooden left in the 6th after allowing a leadoff single to Larkin, committing consecutive balks to send Larkin to third and walking Doran, but Sid Fernandez fanned Al Cowens to stifle the rally.

Browning hit the wall in the 7th, allowing a leadoff home run to Gary Carter followed by a Kevin McReynolds single.  One out later, Ron Robinson was summoned from the pen and struck out pinch-hitter Darryl Strawberry then retired Dick Schofield to end the threat.

Doug Sisk wild-pitched a run home in the bottom of the 7th and the score was 6-2 heading into the 9th.

Steve Farr took the mound for the Reds to open the 9th, and - almost - gave the Reds something we've seen way too often: a major choke.

Farr retired zero of the three batters he faced and left the mound in disgrace with one run in and runners on the corners.

John Franco replaced Farr (with the tying run suddenly at the plate) and amazingly retired the side without further incident: Doran stabbed Strawberry's line drive, Schofield fouled out to SS and Franco struck out Tim Teufel to end the game and tie the NLCS 1-1 as we head back to New York for the remainder of the series.

In a turnaround from game 1, Cincy pitchers walked nobody today and combined for 8 strikeouts.

Prospective starters for game 3 are Ted Power and Bob Ojeda.

Alan
