Subject: Opening Day report from Tiger Stadium
If one game can predict a season, it looks like 1987 will unfortunately be very much like 1986 for the Jays. We again have all the talent necessary to win the division, but an ability to choke that is simply off the charts.... Dave Stieb got the ball rolling by getting out of the first inning with merely 3 runs allowed thanks to an HBP and a gopher after 2 were out. The Toronto offense took a break from stranding 10 runners to plate 6 consecutive runs for a 6-3 lead after 6 innings. Surely leaving the bases loaded in the second wouldn't matter, nor would Manny Trillo's $ clutch choke with 2 runners in scoring position in the 5th. Of course it would matter, it always does. For one thing Trillo wasn't done choking, also the Toronto Arson Squad hadn't brought in the gasoline yet. Keith Comstock bailed Stieb out of a mini-jam to end the 6th, but once the 7th inning rolled around our bullpen's true ability came through loud and clear as usual. The inning opened with what would turn out to be a critical error (FIVE unearned runs worth) by Trillo. 2 outs, 2 wild pitches and a walk later, Comstock allowed an RBI double and was replaced on the mound by another rookie, Jose Nunez with the score 6-4. Yes, Comstock kept the rally alive but he wasn't choking efficiently enough. Nunez would show him how to do it right. Nunez gave a free pass to the first batter he faced in the majors and then a ballpark Grand Slam on that famous sluggers' roll of 5-11 to the second batter he faced. The only surprise was that Nunez was permitted to face some more batters after that performance, and (alas, too late) got them out. The Jays managed to give Detroit 8 runs on just 6 hits, and lost by the score of 8-6. Alan |
