Subject: Blue Jays @ Tigers
Looking forward to 1988 already. Not because the Blue Jays' luck will be any better, but at least the games will have reasonable scores. Both teams scored 26 runs, averaging 6.5 runs/game in this series.... Game 2: The lowest-scoring game of the four. Lots of hits (mostly singles), lots of walks, lots of LOB even though the teams combined to turn 6 DPs. Toronto turned a 5-1 lead in the middle innings into a 5-3 final as ace reliever Tom Henke tried to choke it away but narrowly failed. He would try again - harder this time - in game 4. Game 3: The Jays strand 12, give up two very critical unearned runs and TOA starter John Cerutti allows his first 2 of what will undoubtedly be hundreds of gophers this season. Jays lose, 7-6. Detroit starter Fernando Valenzuela was very wild, but his wildness wasn't as costly as our dreadful clutch performance, both at the plate and in the field. Game 4: How many teams in the history of baseball have blown a 5 run lead in extra innings? Today the Jays came ever so close to joining that exclusive (perhaps nonexistent) club. Frank Tanana and several DEA relievers stifled the Jays most of the day, while ace starter Jimmy Key and his excellent card fooled nobody. Lloyd Moseby's 1-out triple off of a lefty reliever (!) tied the game 4-4 in the 9th, but he was stranded there and the contest proceeded to the 10th. Toronto then collected 6 hits and scored 5 times to take an utterly safe 9-4 lead. Enter ace reliever Tom Henke and his excellent card. Walk, single, walk, Grand Slam, 9-8 score, nobody out. Finally finished with batting practice, Henke somehow retired 3 batters in a row to salvage the incredibly tough series split. STAT OF THE SERIES: The numbers of hits, total bases and baserunners were almost identical for both teams, but: OBP+SLG in "clutch" situations: Detroit 1.016, Toronto .538. Alan |
