Subject: Reds @ Padres
The Reds leave San Diego's Gopher Heaven by coming one typical (for the Reds) 4-run choke away from a sweep, but this was still one tremendously ugly series. The teams combined for **22** home runs in 4 games.... Game 1: CIN starter Bill Gullickson allowed 4 gophers and choked away 100% (and more) of the 5-0 lead he was given, but both team's offenses took a rare break late in the game and the outcome wasn't decided until Nick Esasky tripled home the winning run in the 12th. Final score: 7-6. The Cincy bullpen, in highly uncharacteristic fashion, supplied 7+ innings of competent work. Game 2: Another day, another Cincy starter (Tom Browning) with a disgusting 4-gopher performance. But even though the Reds offense was losing the homer battle, we scored enough runs to eventually get Browning an 8-5 victory. The bullpen again somehow failed to permit the Padres to score during the final 3 innings. Game 3: John Farrell held the home team to just one gopher but faded after getting a 3-run lead in the 7th and the bullpen completed the choke. Final score: a 7-6 loss, though SDN had only 7 hits on the day. Lloyd McClendon, in his first start behind the plate for the Reds, homered twice and collected 5 RBI. But another rookie, Paul O'Neill, handed the Pads 2 critical unearned runs on a 4-base fiasco in left field. Game 4: Ted Power took a shutout into the 7th, but like Farrell faded at that point and allowed 4 late runs. Fortunately the Reds had a 9-0 lead at time. The teams combined for 13 runs for the 4th straight game, and only 5 LOB. Dave Parker, who doesn't figure heavily into the Reds plans this season, had the series of his life (.538, 4 homers, 8 RBI) in an effort to earn more playing time, which at this rate he just might get.
