Subject: Reds @ Dodgers

Team Luckless does it again: the Reds did get *some* breaks in this series,
but unfortunately they all came in a game 2 blowout.

Game 1: The Dodgers scored nine runs, ALL after two were out in an inning,
and the first six were unearned to boot. That kind of effort is hard to
overcome, and true to form, the Reds could not. Final score: 9-6.

Game 2: Cincy busted up Bill Singer for 7 runs in less than 2 innings, and
Jim McGlothlin (now 4-8, 3.16) went the route in a 10-4 laugher.

Game 3: LA returns the favor against the hapless Don Wilson (8 ER in 2 IP)
in an equally laughable 12-3 rout. Denny LeMaster went nine for the home
team for his 11th win.

Game 4: Yet another in a long line of incredible Cincy chokes. This one
took 17 innings to complete, but it sure was worth waiting for.

LA had pushed across 3 runs in the third inning, and Claude Osteen was
pitching well, but the Reds somehow fought back to tie the game in the
eighth. The key to the comeback was Clay Carroll (of all people) pitching 6
innings of 1-hit relief, as well as reaching on an Osteen error in the
eighth, keeping the inning alive (Carroll, a 7N hitter, was allowed to take
his cuts since he's better than any of the Cincy benchwarmers).

The Reds, as is their custom, blew numerous chances to take the lead,
stranding a possible-SMILEY-record 21 runners on this day. If you are
unfamiliar with the Reds, you might think that scoring 3 runs in the top of
the 16th inning would have salted this one away for Cincy, and achieved a
series split.

Yeah, right.

Gary Nolan had thrown 3+ innings of relief and was noticeably tiring,
allowing 1 run to score before being lifted for Jack Billingham. Billingham
retired pinch-hitter Johnny Briggs on an RBI groundout, leaving the Dodgers
a run down with nobody on and two out. A triple and a double later the game
was tied, and the strangulation was complete when Cincy-killer Willie "I'd
be in the Hall-of-Fame if I played these guys every day" Crawford homered.

Crawford (.251 overall) is batting .289 against the Reds, and 6 of his 14
homers have come at Cincy's expense (a rate of 69 homers per 600 AB).

Alan
