july 25 Al Downing went 7 strong innings and Clete Boyer smacked a grand slam at Tiger Stadium where the New York AL Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 10 to 3. Boyer provided much of the offense. He emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 13th of the season) in the 4th inning and lined a one-base hit in the 8th inning. For the game New York AL out-hit Detroit 11 to 4. Downing(9-12) got the win allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Bob Friend(16-5) was the loser. He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. The key offensive moment was provided by Norm Cash who made the crowd come alive when he doubled bringing in two baserunners. Detroit managed only 5 on the afternoon.
