Boston wins 3 straight to take the 86 Series by a 4-2 margin.

Game 1: In a preview of the 1987 season, the hitters break out the whooping sticks in this one. Boston wasted no time in getting on the board as Barrett and Boggs singled to start the game and moved up on a wild pitch. Sox could only manage one run after a couple ground outs and a strike out ended the inning. Barrett and Boggs again led the offense in the 3rd, getting a walk and single to start the inning. This time Boston got 2 runs on a Gedman single and a Bergman bases loaded walk. Boggs' third hit of the game in the 4th brought in another run and Boston was cruising with a 4-0 lead and Clemens pitching well after a game leading double and walk. The Reds' bats finally woke up starting in the 5th. Larkin tripled in a run and scored on a ground out to cut the lead in half. In the bottom of the 6th, Parker led off with a homer. After Diaz was thrown out stretching a single, it looked like Boston would hold their lead. However, Larkin hit another 1-5 triple to tie the game and then Jim Pankovits hit a 2 run homer and Cincy was up 6-4.  A Buddy Bell open the 8th and opened the flood gates. After Baylor struck out, the Sox got 6 straight hits (5 singles and a double) to score 6 runs and take a 10-6 lead. Dwight Evans hit a 3 run homer in the 9th to add salt to the wound and close out the 13-6 win. The top third of the Boston lineup (Barrett, Boggs and Rice) went 12-17 with 8 runs scored, while Evans ended up with 5 rbi.

Game 2: Boston left the bases loaded in the first after a double and 2 walks. Reds got on the board in the second when Davis doubled and came all the way around as Rice misplayed the ball. Baylor homered in the 4th to tie the game but Parker homered in the bottom of the inning to give the Reds the lead for good. Reds added 2 more in the 5th on a walk, wp and 2 singles. Reds added one in the 7th when Barrett booted a grounder with the bases loaded. Schiraldi came on a got a dp to avoid further damage. 2 doubles (one by the pitcher) a sac bunt and a pb, gave the Reds 2 more runs in the 8th and completed the 7-1 win that tied the series.

Game 3:  The series moved to Boston and Evans hit a homer in the 2nd to give the Sox an early 1-0 lead. Power and Boyd kept the bats in check until the 7th when Pankovits hit a grand slam to highlight a 5 run inning. Rice singled in Barrett in the 8th and Boston got the tying run to the plate in the 9th but the Reds held on for a 5-2 win and a the series lead.

Game 4: Clemens looked to rebound from his poor game 1 performance against Bill Gullickson. Gullickson pitched well, allowing just a 2 run homer to Don Baylor in the 3rd. That was enough for Clemens as he went the distance allowing just 3 hits while striking out 11 in the 2-0 win that evened the series.

Game 5: Scott Sanderson looked to continue his strong second half and Joe Cowley looked for redemption from his game 1 start. Boston scored in the first. They loaded the bases on an error, walk and hbp but mananged just one run. Reds used 2 doubles and a single to take a 2-1 lead in the 2nd but Boston got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Reds took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 5th when Hayes doubled, moved to 3rd on a bunt and scored on a sac fly. Rafael Santana became the hero with a 2 run single in the bottom of the inning to give the Sox a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish. Reds managed just 2 bases runners the last 4 innings and one was erased on a dp. Despite leaving 13 on base, Boston headed back to Cincinnati with a 3-2 series lead.

Game 6: Bruce Hurst vs Tom Browning in a game 2 rematch.  Cincy jumped to the early lead when Bell hit a 2 run homer in the bottom of the first. Ron Roenicke's 2 run homer in the 4th capped a 3 run inning that gave Boston the lead. Three straight 2 out singles off Tekulve in the 7th tied the game. Larkin went deep in the hole to snare a Salazar grounder, but threw late and wild, allowing Salazar to reach 2nd base. Boggs followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Evans then hit a hard grounder. The Reds decided to go for 2 and allow the go ahead run to score. The Reds got a walk in both the 8th and 9th but couldn't get the equalizer.

Wade Boggs was named series MVP after going 11-21 with 6 walks. Barrett was 9-24 with 7 runs scored. For the Reds Kal Daniels went 6-14 and Von Hayes went 6-17.  Boxscores and complete stats are available on the SMILEY website.
