Game 1 Tim Burke performed beautifully in relief as the Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 6 to 5 at BUSCH STADIUM.
Montreal took the lead for good in the top of the 6th inning scoring 2 runs on 3 hits. Casey Candaele opened up the inning nicely when he laced a base-hit. Tom Nieto next to the plate and he drew a walk. Harold Baines then stroked a single to load the bases. Tim Raines followed and he drew a walk. One out later, Mike Schmidt struck out, unable to help the rally. Andres Galarraga kept the rally going and stroked a single. Mitch Webster dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. St. Louis went down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th.
Charlie Puleo (3-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 innings and allowing 5 runs. Puleo got help from Burke who was credited with his 4th save. The losing pitcher was Ricky Horton (0-1) in relief.
'He gutted it out' Steve Bivens said of Puleo. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'
Game 2 Tommy Herr had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at BUSCH STADIUM as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Montreal Expos 4 to 1.
St. Louis came up with 3 runs in the 6th inning when they had 3 base hits. The big moment was provided by Herr who made the St. Louis fans a happy lot when he doubled bringing in two base runners. St. Louis rapped out 9 hits for the night.
The victory was credited to Danny Cox (2-3) who went 8 innings, allowing 1 run. Dewayne Buice was credited with his 4th save. Juan Nieves (1-3) was charged with the loss.
With this win, St. Louis has a 10-13 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With the loss, Montreal has a record of 3-7 lately, 15-11 overall.
Game 3 Shortstop Spike Owen had 2 base hits and Neal Heaton had a strong outing as the Montreal Expos topped the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 4 to 1 at BUSCH STADIUM.
Montreal scored 3 runs in the 4th inning when they had 3 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Luis Aguayo who disappointed the partisan crowd when he belted a three-run homer. St. Louis went down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.
Heaton (5-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Tim Burke got the save, his 5th. Joe Magrane (2-3) was charged with the loss. He pitched 6 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.
The Montreal ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 16-11. With this loss, St. Louis has a 5-5 record of late, 10-14 overall.
Game 4 In a close game it was the St. Louis Cardinals 6, the Montreal Expos 4 at BUSCH STADIUM.
Bob Forsch (1-0) pitched well enough to earn the win. He allowed 6 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings. St. Louis managed 9 hits in their victory.
Forsch got help from Dewayne Buice who was credited with his 5th save. The loss was charged to Bryn Smith (1-2).
