Andres Galarraga has quite the series as he goes 8 for 12 with 4 doubles, 3 runs scored and 8 runs batted in.
Game 1 First baseman Andres Galarraga had 4 hits and 6 RBI and Neal Heaton pitched 5 strong innings at WRIGLEY FIELD where the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago NL Cubs by the score of 9 to 1.
Galarraga provided much of the offense. He smacked a single scoring a run in the 1st inning, doubled scoring two base runners in the 3rd inning, doubled scoring two base runners in the 4th inning and slapped a one-base hit bringing in a run in the 6th inning. For the game Montreal out-hit Chicago NL 16 to 5.
Heaton(6-0) allowed no runs in 5 innings, and picked up the victory. Tim Conroy(1-3) was charged with the loss. He was touched for 11 hits and 5 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
Montreal now has a record of 18-14. Thomas Treece was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 1-9 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.'
Game 2 The Montreal Expos easily topped the Chicago NL Cubs; the final score was 8 to 2.
Mitch Webster had a big day against Chicago NL. He doubled which scored a run in the 2nd inning and belted a three-run homer in the 8th inning. Montreal had 10 hits for the night while Chicago NL had 4.
Floyd Youmans(1-0) got the win allowing 2 runs in 6 innings. Mike Witt(1-4) took the loss. With this win, Montreal has a 19-14 record. They have been 6-4 lately. Thomas Treece was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'
Game 3 Shortstop Spike Owen had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos outscored the ice-cold Chicago NL Cubs 7 to 6.
Montreal erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 8th inning with 3 runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Mike Schmidt began the Montreal spurt when he smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly'. Andres Galarraga stepped up next and he doubled. Fred Lynn struck out, unable to help the rally. Luis Aguayo stepped in and he was hit by a pitch. Owen stepped into the box and doubled. Montreal managed 11 hits in their victory.
Andy McGaffigan(1-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Tim Burke earned his 6th save. Brad Havens(0-1) was given the loss in relief.
Game 4 Andres Galarraga had 2 base hits as the Montreal Expos defeated the reeling Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 6 to 3 at WRIGLEY FIELD.
Montreal promptly took the lead in their half of the first scoring 2 runners on 3 hits. Montreal had 11 hits for the game and Chicago NL had 6.
The winning pitcher was Charlie Puleo(4-2) who allowed 3 runs in 6 innings. Puleo got help from Bob McClure who was credited with his 1st save. Jamie Moyer(3-3) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 4 walks.
The winning ways continue for Montreal . They now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Chicago NL is 1-9 of late and now has an overall record of 12-20, worst in the division.
