Shortstop Ozzie Smith hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI and Joe Magrane was able to
finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the St. Louis
Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 7 to 2 at BUSCH STADIUM.
St. Louis set the tone of the game in the first inning as they scored 5 runs
on 6 base hits. That was all the offense they were to need. St. Louis
rapped out 10 hits for the night.
Magrane(6-3) allowed 2 runs on the game. The losing pitcher was Tim
Belcher(1-1). He surrendered 6 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings.

40,458 fans were treated to a fine game at BUSCH STADIUM as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The St. Louis Cardinals won by the
slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.
St. Louis brought 2 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning. Pedro Guerrero
led off the inning for St. Louis when he drew a walk. Mario Soto then threw
a high and inside pitch that got by the catcher; it was ruled a passed ball.
Terry Pendleton then drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Willie McGee
stepped in and he reached on an error. Tony Pena stepped into the box and
hit a deep fly. Larry Andersen was great in relief and recorded his 3rd
save.
The winning pitcher was John Tudor(3-1) who allowed 1 run in 6 innings.
Soto(2-1) was charged with the loss. He pitched 6 innings allowing only 2
hits and 2 walks.
