Subject: Chicago @ New York

If I could take away 2 pitches, the Cubs very well might have completed a sweep at Shea Stadium.  Instead, the Cubs continued their downward spiral in 1987 with Andre Dawson blasting away nonetheless.

G1 was the career debut of LH starter Greg Swindell.  The former U. of Texas standout (6 3 1 1 1 6) outpitched fellow southpaw Sid Fernandez (8 5 4 4 4 3) and turned the game over to the Cubs' bullpen. For the only time in this series, Chicago's relievers were not only up to the challenge, but were virtually perfect for their 3 innings (3 1 0 0 1 2).

Chicago got all its runs in the 2nd (A Leon Durham triple before he scored on Fernandez's wild pitch and then Jody Davis' solo HR) and the 3rd innings (Dawson's 2-run HR).  Keith Hernandez's solo HR in the bottom of the 3rd closed out the scoring.

Final Score - Chicago 4, New York 1
WP - Swindell 1-0, LP - Fernandez 3-4, SV - James (7)
HR - Davis (5), Dawson (20), Hernandez (3)

G2 featured a matchup of strikeout masters Jamie Moyer and Dwight Gooden.  You may roll your eyes, but with each pitcher going 7 innings and allowing 2 runs, the strikeout king on this day was Moyer, 9-strikeouts-to-8.

The Mets struck quickly when Kevin McReynolds homered with Tim Teufel on base in the 1st inning to make the score, 2-0.  The Cubs came back to tie the game on Andre Dawson's 2-out 4th inning solo HR, and Moyer's (9-for-29 on the season) 2-out single in the 5th which drove home Juan Beniquez after he had doubled with one out.  Despite various rallies (mostly by NY), neither team scored again until the game went to extra innings tied, 2-2.  This was primarily due to terrific relief pitching by Rich Yett (3 1 0 0 4 1) and Randy Myers (3 0 0 0 0 2)

In the 11th inning, with 1 man out, the Cubs mounted a threat with men at 1st and 2nd after a single and error, but David Cone struck out Dawson and retired Durham on a flyball to end that threat.  In the bottom of the inning, normally reliable Frank DiPino could only retire 1 batter of the 4 he faced, as Dick Schofield's 3rd hit (a 2B in the gap) plated Howard Johnson with the winning run.

Final Score - Chicago 3, New York 2,
WP - Cone 2-1, LP - DiPino 2-2
HR - McReynolds (7), Dawson (21)

G3 was the most bitter pill of all for Cubs' fans watching from their living rooms.  After 3 innings, the game appeared to be heading toward a slugfest with the Cubs clinging to a 4-3 lead.  Dawson and Darnell Coles slugged 1st inning home runs for Chicago and Coles added a run-scoring single in the 3rd.  For New York, Johnson's FC scored a run in the 1st, and Johnson's RBI double and Mookie Wilson's RBI single in the 3rd scored 2 more runs.

The Cubs scored an insurance run in the 6th when Shawon Dunston tripled and scored on PH Joe Carter's sac fly.  Chicago led, 5-3.  The Mets received an absolute gift run in the 7th inning.  With 2 outs, Hernandez doubled. On the next two pitches, Hernandez went to 3rd base on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.  This was with Chris Bando behind the plate and sporting a 2 range rating.  This made the score just 5-4, in favor of Chicago.

In the fateful 8th, the Cubs again increased its lead to two runs when Bando's double drove home Coles.  But, in the bottom of the inning the dam broke.  Brad Havens started the inning for Chicago by walking Wilson with one out.  Wes Gardner was summoned from the pen, and he struck out PH Jim Dwyer for the 2nd out.  Cub killer Dick Schofield doubled to move Wilson to 3rd.  The Mets then called upon Tim Teufel to pinch hit and he lifted a fastball into the cheap seats for what ended up being a GW 3-run HR.  The Cubs got a runner to 2nd base against Roger McDowell in the 9th, but no further.

Final Score - New York 7, Chicago 6
WP - Sisk 3-4, LP - Gardner 0-3, SV - McDowell (5)
HR - Dawson (22), Coles (2), Teufel (8)

MVP candidate(?) Dawson homered in each of the 3 games of the series, but the Cubs bullpen faltered in trying to match the heroics of the Mets' fine relievers (7 3 0 0 0 6) as NY took the series in dramatic fashion, 2-games-to-1.
