Subject: Reds @ Braves
The Braves featured a tremendously efficient offense (games 1 & 4 combined: 11 runs scored, only *3* LOB) and gave the Reds a lot of trouble, but also gave up a lot of runs. The series would have been a sweep except for one of our sadly routine 5-run chokes.... Game 1: Bill Gullickson, just one of many unaccountably shell-shocked Cincy starters in 1987, had a perfect game going for a while (and a 4-run lead) when suddenly the roof caved in. Von '2e8' Hayes in right field allowed TWO x-doubles in the same surgical 5-run inning, and when Gullickson was finally yanked Rob Murphy came in and choked up the "Perfect Sambito" game-losing gopher to the first batter he faced. Mike Morgan and 3 Atlanta relievers pitched well, but it would have been for nothing without our Herculean choking effort. Game 2: Danny Jackson tossed one of the ugliest complete game wins ever recorded (as we smartly avoid the bullpen), scattering 16 baserunners while allowing 6 runs. The Cincy offense finally showed up and banged out 12 runs, 18 hits and 29 total bases. Game 3: Just about a total repeat of game 2, except Tom Browning fared slightly better than Jackson due to allowing fewer free passes. The offense plated 12 runs again (and collected 29 total bases again) while stranding 11 runners. Final score: 12-3. Game 4: A major contrast in efficiency (LOB: CIN - 11, ATN - 1), our lack of clutch performance forcing a come from behind effort that finally resulted in a 7-5 win. Cincy tallied only 15 hits, 5 walks and 21 total bases today as Tom Glavine's first career start against the Reds wasn't too bad but reliever Jeff Dedmon was hit hard and took the loss. Alan |
