Subject: Tigers @ White Sox
Detroit takes 3 of 4 from the slumping White Sox. An ugly series, with lots of errors, passed balls, wild pitches & balks. Game 1: Two struggling starters (Joe Sparma & Joel Horlen) engage in a pitchers duel, and Sparma (with relief help from Mike Kilkenny) prevails by the score of 2-0. Sparma allowed only 4 hits to the Sox in his 6 innings of work, and Kilkenny was near-perfect, allowing no hits and walking just one batter. The Tigers managed only 6 safeties (all singles) and 2 runs (one unearned) off Horlen in 7 innings. Game 2: Chicago would fail to score in the first 16 innings of this series, but when they finally did, they threw quite a scare into the Tigers. Their late-inning comeback attempt fell just short, as the Tigers and Mickey Lolich took this one by the score of 4-3. The difference on this day was the 2 unearned runs the Tigers were able to score; of the 4 errors in the game, 3 were made by pitchers (Lolich-2, Lonborg). Tom Timmerman notched save #19 for Detroit. Game 3: This was the game the Sox won (7-5), but just barely. Starters Jerry Johnson & Bill Stoneman were ineffective, and the key to the Chicago victory was ex-Tiger John Hiller. Hiller not only threw 4 innings of 1-run relief, he went 2 for 2 at the plate with a key RBI single in the sixth, which finally sent Johnson to the showers. This time it was Detroit giving Chicago a couple of gift runs that tilted the outcome towards the Sox. Game 4: If Chicago could have come up with a clutch hit or two, game 4 wouldn't have been close. But they couldn't, and Denny McLain won EXTREMELY ugly, 8-5. Lew Krausse (6 runs in less than 3 IP) was chased early, and Wilbur Wood wasn't much of an improvement. But the story of the game was Chicago blowing chance after chance: McLain allowed 13 hits (11 singles, 2 doubles) and walked nobody, but the Sox had to work hard to strand 10 runners to the Tigers' 4. Willie Horton (#29) and Jim Northrup (#18) accounted for almost all of the Detroit offense with their 3-run homers. Tony Taylor also left the yard for the Tigers. Alan |
