Game 1 Juan Nieves racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts as the Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6 to 2 at BUSCH STADIUM.
Nieves (7-5) gave Montreal a solid outing. He went 7 innings surrendering 5 hits and 2 walks. Both teams finished the game with 7 hits.
The loss was charged to John Tudor (5-5). He allowed 6 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings. Nieves was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet. Just strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'
Game 2 Darrell Miller hit a homerun and had 4 RBI at BUSCH STADIUM where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Montreal Expos by the score of 6 to 2.
Miller enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He doubled which scored a run in the 2nd inning and belted a three-run homer in the 6th inning. St. Louis banged out 12 hits on the night.
Danny Cox (7-5) went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Neal Heaton (9-2) was the losing pitcher. His ERA ballooned from 2.55 to 2.93 as he allowed 6 runs in 6 innings.
Game 3 39,871 fans were treated to a fine game at BUSCH STADIUM as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The Montreal Expos won by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.
Montreal went ahead for good in the top of the 5th inning scoring 2 runners on 2 hits. St. Louis made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The win was credited to Bryn Smith (3-7) who went 5 innings allowing 4 runs. Tim Burke earned his 22nd save. Joe Magrane (12-4) was hit with the loss.
'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Mike Rescigno 'But we have to get over it and get ready for the next game.'
Game 4 At BUSCH STADIUM, the St. Louis faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's duel. Bob Forsch (8-3) finally bested his Montreal counterpart, Dennis Martinez (7-4), by the score of 3 to 1.
Forsch pitched well for St. Louis in their victory. He allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.92 to 3.72. St. Louis had 11 hits overall, while Montreal had 6.
Dewayne Buice recorded his 20th save. The loss was charged to Martinez . He was hit hard and gave up 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
