Game 1 Harold Baines homered as the Montreal Expos beat the New York NL Mets by a score of 4 to 2.
Montreal jumped on top to stay in the top of the 3rd inning scoring a single run. After two were out Baines providing the offense himself as he belted a solo home run. That was all Bryn Smith (4-7) needed. Despite losing, New York NL out-hit Montreal 11 to 5.
Tim Burke recorded the save, his 25th. Mike Scott (8-7) suffered the loss. He surrendered 5 hits and 5 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Game 2 Sid Fernandez had a strong outing as the New York NL Mets defeated the Montreal Expos by the score of 4 to 2 at SHEA STADIUM.
New York NL took the lead off Dennis Martinez in the first inning when they scored 2 runs on 3 hits. New York NL ended up with 12 hits for the game while Montreal had 3.
The winning pitcher was Fernandez (9-5) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings. Roger McDowell got the save, his 15th. The loss was charged to Martinez (8-5). He gave up 4 runs and 8 hits in 5 innings.
Game 3 Second baseman Wally Backman had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Dwight Gooden completed the game without help from the bullpen as the New York NL Mets defeated the Montreal Expos 9 to 2 at SHEA STADIUM.
The game started off with New York NL taking the lead in the first when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Darryl Strawberry who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run. New York NL totaled 9 hits on the night.
Gooden (7-1) allowed 2 runs on the game. Floyd Youmans (4-1) was tagged with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 9 runs in 6 innings.
New York NL now has a record of 48-39. With this loss, Montreal has a 5-5 record of late, 56-34 overall.
Game 4 In a two run game the Montreal Expos got by the New York NL Mets by the score of 4 to 2.
Montreal scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 8th inning scoring 2 runs on 4 hits. After two were out Andres Galarraga got things rolling when he delivered a base-hit. Fred Lynn came next and he lined a single. Mitch Webster then delivered a one-base hit. Spike Owen followed and he lined a single. Owen took second on the throw. New York NL could do no damage in the bottom of the 9th.
Juan Nieves (9-5) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Tim Burke gained credit for his 26th save. Ron Darling (6-4) was the loser.
