A 1987 series for sure…or the wind was blowing out at Wrigley. Expos out homer the Cubs 13-3…and there were no homeruns hit in the fourth game. The Cub homeruns were 3 of the first 4 batters in game 3. Dawson would have been the fourth but missed a ballpark homerun with a 19 split.
Game 1 Harold Baines smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the floundering Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 11 to 4 at WRIGLEY FIELD.
Baines was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He doubled in the 1st inning, delivered a solo blast in the 5th inning and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 8th inning. Montreal out-hit Chicago NL for the game, 16 hits to 12.
The win went to Juan Nieves (10-8) who allowed 4 runs in 7 innings. The losing pitcher was Dave Meads (2-2) in relief. Montreal now has a record of a division leading 63-44. Thomas Treece was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.'
Game 2 Mitch Webster blasted a homerun and had 4 RBI as the Montreal Expos topped the reeling Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 13 to 5 at WRIGLEY FIELD.
Webster enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He lined a one-base hit scoring a run in the 1st inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 6th inning. Montreal out-hit Chicago NL for the game, 14 hits to 7.
Neal Heaton (10-5) got the win allowing 5 runs in 5 innings. Jamie Moyer (7-9) was the loser. He was knocked around by Montreal , allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
Game 3 Second baseman Vance Law had 4 hits and 4 RBI at WRIGLEY FIELD where the Montreal Expos beat the slumping Chicago NL Cubs by the score of 11 to 4.
Law had a big day against Chicago NL. He doubled plating two runs in the 4th inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 5th inning, stroked a single in the 6th inning and doubled in the 8th inning. Montreal dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.
Bryn Smith (5-9) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 7 innings. Rich Yett (3-4) was given the loss. His ERA ballooned from 5.53 to 6.28 as he allowed 8 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.
'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my swing and made some adjustments,' Law said. 'I'm always working on it. If they are getting you out certain ways, you've got to make changes.'
Game 4 The Montreal Expos nipped the reeling Chicago NL Cubs 4 to 3 at WRIGLEY FIELD in a hard fought contest.
Montreal scored 3 runs in the top of the 3rd inning with the help of 3 hits. Tom Nieto led off and he doubled. Jay Tibbs was next and he slapped a base-hit. Tim Raines struck out, unable to help the rally. Spike Owen was up next and he tripled. Mike Schmidt came to the plate and drew a walk. After another out, Greg Swindell stepped in and he uncorked a pitch that was ruled a passed ball. Mitch Webster was the next batter, but he struck out. Montreal managed 9 hits in their victory.
The win was credited to Tibbs (2-0) who went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 1 run. Tibbs got help from Tim Burke who was credited with his 30th save. Swindell (1-6) was hit with the loss.
