Subject: Blue Jays @ White Sox

The major league's top-rated defense played like the Bad News Bears on crack, yet somehow only managed to choke one of the two games away....

Game 1: Dave Stieb had a shutout going into the 6th, but then the defense fell apart and coughed up 3 unearned runs and nearly the ball game.  We did everything possible to lose the game, short of actually using Tom Henke.

Catcher Mark Salas, just recalled from the minors, allowed 3 stolen bases and committed 3 passed balls; defensive sub Nelson 'e4' Liriano at second base committed one of those 4 errors on the first batter after he entered the game; and combined with another critical error to turn our 3-2 lead into a sudden 4-3 deficit.

But both players eventually redeemed themselves: Liriano tripled home a run in the 8th and Salas got a clutch hit in the 9th as we averted another disastrous and undeserved loss.  Salas singled with 2 outs in the 9th and Manny Trillo then doubled, Salas scampering home from first base with the winning run.

======================================

Game 2: Heavily unbalanced CHA starter Doyle Alexander lasted 6.2 innings, during which the Jays rolled his loaded 4 column ONE TIME (and of course found a rare out that one time).  Therefore it was no surprise that the Sox had a 2-1 lead as we moved to the late innings.

Toronto erased that lead with a pair of 2-out RBI singles in the 8th.  But when CHA's Mike Aldrete tripled with 2 outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the 8th, the visiting manager suffered a stroke and summoned Tom Henke to get the final out of the inning and preserve the slim lead.

HAL must have figured that Tim Wallach was an insufficient gopher threat so he had Henke choke away the lead in much more subtle fashion: by immediately uncorking a wild pitch.

The contest dragged on to the 15th inning still tied 3-3 when a leadoff walk was followed by a stolen base and (but of course!) another passed ball to put the losing run at third with nobody out.

Jose Nunez then fanned Tommy Hinzo and walked Brian Downing - whom he then picked off to register the second out.  But all that drama was for naught, as Aldrete singled home the losing unearned run.

Alan
