Game 1 Second baseman Luis Aguayo homered as the Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 4 to 2.
Montreal took the lead for good in the top of the 2nd inning scoring one runner. After two were out Aguayo became the sole author of the rally when he cracked a bases-empty home run. Montreal finished with 11 hits in the victory.
The victory was credited to Neal Heaton (12-7) who went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs. Tim Burke was credited with his 33rd save. Greg Mathews (6-6) was hit with the loss.
Game 2 Tony Pena lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Montreal Expos by a score of 5 to 1 at BUSCH STADIUM.
Bob Forsch (12-4) gave St. Louis a solid outing. He went 7 innings allowing 6 hits and 1 walk. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again.
Game 3 The Montreal Expos nipped the St. Louis Cardinals 3 to 2 at BUSCH STADIUM in a hard fought contest.
The game was decided in the 8th inning. Mike Schmidt delivered a one-base hit. Andres Galarraga was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Mitch Webster then doubled. Casey Candaele was up next and he doubled. Luis Aguayo dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. St. Louis was set down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.
The victory went to Jeff Parrett (1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Tim Burke earned his 34th save. Doug Jones (4-4) was the losing pitcher in relief. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 walk.
Game 4 Ozzie Smith had 4 hits and 3 RBI at BUSCH STADIUM as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Montreal Expos in 11 innings by the count of 5 to 4.
Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. St. Louis won the game in the 11th inning. Willie McGee doubled. Larry Owen was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. John Morris then slapped a single. Vince Coleman got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Smith came to the plate and lined a single resulting in an exciting win for St. Louis and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. St. Louis had 13 hits for the game and Montreal had 6.
