Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees
The eternally underachieving Blue Jays lose even more of our precarious (not to mention futile) grip on the A.L. East pennant race by merely splitting a road series rather than winning it.... Game 1: For the second week in a row TOA starter David Palmer was attacked with surgical precision from the very first batter of the game. Unlike last week, the Toronto offense was not able to dig out of the massive hole. Final score: 8-4. NYA starter Tommy "The Hit Machine" John was anything but that, as he dodged nearly every bullet among the many that flew around him all game long. LOB: TOA - 9, NYA - 2, a ratio which helped John quite a bit. Game 2: Dave Stieb pitched well and three home runs lifted the Jays to an 8-2 win as George Bell went deep twice and amassed 6 RBI. Scrap heap starter Joaquin Andujar made the Toronto offense look inept (real difficult trick there) for a while but he weakened eventually and reliever Bob Tewskbury poured considerable gasoline on the fire. Game 3: Jim Winn's first start in a Blue Jay uniform would have resulted in a Winn for him were it not for Jeff Musselman's first blown save of the year (Musselman also helped put game 1 out of reach with a timely gopher just after a TOA rally). But a couple of 8th inning RBI singles got us the lead back and the Jays took the contest by the score of 4-3 -- but not before attempting our usual 2 outs, bases empty, bottom of the 9th game losing rally on behalf of our opponent. Manny Trillo, whose glove apparently died just as he was drafted by the Jays, finally converted an x-play (after choking on two) to end the game. Game 4: The Jays blew an early lead, Jim Clancy's luckless streak continues for another week, and NYA starter Lee Guetterman was practically unhittable despite facing a lineup full of righties. Final score: 5-3. After we had battled back to nearly tie the game, Keith Comstock unaccountably followed Musselman's script and coughed up a gopher which put the final nail in the coffin. Alan |
